Gwendolyn is my second favorite girl name. I'm not a huge fan of the nickname Wendy though. I prefer Gwen more.

Yep. I have two friends named Wendy, not nicknames, just Wendy. :)

I think Wendy is fine as a full given name, but some that haven't been mentioned that could contract to Wendy:

Ceridwen
Branwen/Bronwen
Rowena

Gwendolyn is the best/most natural full name that shortens to Wendy, though. Plus there's the alternate nickname Gwen, and in general I think options are good. :)

And -wen names are traditionally what Wendy is used for:
Aeronwen
Anwen
Blodwen
Branwen
Bronwen
Ceinwen
Ceridwen
Dilwen
Eilwen
Eirwen
Eurwen
Heulwen
Mairwen
Meinwen
Morwen
Olwen
Rhonwen
Tegwen

I love Olwen, but I like Winnie or Ollie better as nns.

J. M. Barrie created the name Wendy as a standalone for the play Peter Pan. It's my sister's name. I'm not fond of it.

Maybe Wendoline/Wendolyn? Allegedly they're legit variations of Gwendolyn.

I would have never thought of Wendy for Gwendolyn. I never made the association. I like it. Gwendolyn is right up my ally- Long, feminine sounding, a bit unique without being too strange.

I think Wendy stands alone as well, but I like Gwendolyn better.
