I think Wendy is fine as a full given name, but some that haven't been mentioned that could contract to Wendy:
Ceridwen Branwen/Bronwen Rowena
Gwendolyn is the best/most natural full name that shortens to Wendy, though. Plus there's the alternate nickname Gwen, and in general I think options are good. :)
I would have never thought of Wendy for Gwendolyn. I never made the association. I like it. Gwendolyn is right up my ally- Long, feminine sounding, a bit unique without being too strange.
I think Wendy stands alone as well, but I like Gwendolyn better.
