i've gone back to my family tree and noticed a few names that repeat on both sides. my families don't know each other, are from diff't cultures, and don't sync up in terms of generations so this is very interesting to me. have any of you noticed a similar occurrence in your families and if so with what names?

Jacqueline
Mary / Marie
Louis
Joyce
Maya

The only thing like that we have in my family is the fact that my mom and my dad each have sisters named Betsy (not Elizabeth nicknamed Betsy... but straight up Betsy), and that women in both my dad's and my mom's families have the middle name Jo (which is why I was given Jo as a middle name).

The middle names Ann, Jo, Mary/Marie, and Lynn are the most popular middle names. So I'm not surprised Mary/Marie showed up on both sides of the family. My mother's family is Hispanic Catholic so every other female in the family has Maria as a middle name, including my sister.

The first names Karen and Wendy show up in both my father's family and my mother's, which I found strange because neither are Hispanic names.

I worked with a family where the aunt (who was guardian) was one of seven girls...all named Maria _________ Last Name. Most of them went my their middle names or nicknames, but I always wondered how they decided who was going to get to go by Maria or when someone called out for Maria, did they all answer?

I heard of a family of girls that did the same thing with Mary as the first name: Mary Anne, Mary Susan, Mary Elizabeth, Mary Katherine, and so on. From what I understand, each girl was called by her full name to differentiate between them. Honestly, if it were me, I would just give up Mary at that point and go by my middle name!

My family tree is nearly the opposite...almost NO overlap of names, even common ones like Charles, Edward, Mary, etc.

My families have very different names tastes that kind of... sum up what both sides are like... One side has classy very Italian influenced and correctly spelled names and the other side has... well name themes everywhere (they actually have sisters named Angerly and Engerly... and a million E names... I got lucky thanks to my mother) and just overall poor taste in names (and yes, this is exactly how I see that side of my family, no need to get into too much detail... there are some good names though they're way too many people on that side, a good name is bound to pop up every now and then)

Angerly and Engerly

Fantastic! LOL! I've seen Engerly before on a couple of Hispanic women, but I've never, ever seen anyone named Angerly LOL.

I haven't noticed similar names popping up in both sides of my family--at least not as far as recent times go. I do not have records of either side's genealogy earlier than my great-grandparents, so I can't be sure. Part of it might just be due to ethnic origin: my dad's family is largely Irish Catholic, while my mom's is heavily Welsh and German protestant.

There is one name that seems common between the 2, though: Mary/Marie. My maternal aunt's middle name is Marie and so is mine; my great grandmother, grandmother, and aunt on my dad's side all had the middle name Mary. I think it goes to show how classic Mary/Marie is in the English-speaking world!

Mollie appears on both my mom and dad's side of the same, and both times it's spelled that way- I always thought that was interesting. Both Mollies had the Hebrew name of Malka as well.

Morris also appears twice on my mom's side of the family.

My sister and one of my littlest cousins (actually my first cousin once removed) both have Brooke as a middle name.

My mom's middle name is Jean. My dad's mom's middle name is Jean. My adopted cousin's middle name is Jean. She was four when she was adopted so her name wasn't changed at all, barring the last name obviously.

My name is Lauren and my brother married a Lauren.

My paternal great-aunt is Rosemary. My maternal grandmother is Rosemarie. I just found out my maternal aunt's middle name is Marie and my middle name is Marie, not for her to my knowledge.

Off the top of my head are Dan and Rachel. I have an uncle and three cousins named Dan, and two of those cousins have sisters names Rachel. I also have two aunts named Mary. John/Jonathan. And then the planned ones (some are passing on first names, some are using first names as middle names) with Ken, Duane, Mary, Angela, Rayanna, Marguite (oh, and I had an aunt and a great uncle's wife named Marguite, although spelled differently), Joesph. That's all I can think of, though it's been a while since I've looked at my family tree.
