[identity profile] politicking.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

I posted a couple months ago about a girl I worked with thinking about naming her baby Mariyah Mah’Ree (Ma-Rye-Ah Marie)... And I just looked at the birth announcements and they actually did it. They named their child Mariyah Mah’Ree... *headdesk*

Mah'Ree has got to be the worst butcher job I've seen of a name in a while!

Ugh, I was hoping they would change their minds.

Even without the horrible spelling, the name is quite ridiculous.

I am glad that i live in a country with strict rules concerning names.
All i can say is : yikes. I feel soooo sorry for the child.

What kind of rules? I find the whole idea of that so restricting; I feel like most of my favourite names wouldn't be allowed because they're not common or well-known. It sounds like it would be boring.

German naming laws:

a)the name must me be a real name; no surnames,no brand names
b)name must be feminine or mascule; when you use a unisex name the middle name have to be feminine or masculine like Luca Julia or Luca Leon.
c)the given name must not be absurd or degrading the child

Hmm, interesting. Thanks for answering :) I was right, I don't think all my names would be allowed.

I think those laws are perfectly acceptable. B is a little odd, but A and C are great.

Yikes. I guess I could live with "C," but the other two? Personally, I'd rather suffer through oddly named kids than have legal mandates on what I can name my child.

Mariah Marie is STILL a weird name. Too similar. It's like naming your kid Christina Christine.
