Name rambling
Nov. 24th, 2009 10:49 pmIt's been a few months since I've posted on here. I've managed to get sucked into the Twilight fandom and have absolutely, positively fallen in love with the names Jasper, Emmett and Esme. I've always loved the name Edward long before I managed to get sucked in.
I would totally use the name Jasper someday.
I tease my friends and boyfriend that we're gonna have twins and name them Jasper and Casper, of course I would NEVER, EVER put that kind of torture on myhellions kids.
Luckily, I'm not expecting at all! :D

Date: 2009-11-25 09:48 am (UTC)most of the other names from the book are fine - edward, jacob, isabella (bella), esme, alice, rosalie, ect - because they were relatively common before the book, but names like jasper and emmett (and perhaps rosalie, but i've met tons of older people with that name personally) are going to immediately strike a picture in a lot of minds from twilight and i wouldn't be ok with that, even if i was a fan of the series.
i'd prefer my child's name not immediately remind a person of something else when i tell them what the name is, you know? like i wouldn't want to introduce my newborn to a stranger in a grocery store and have them be like "oh like twilight?!!" every single time. not even just twilight, just any name popular because of something else, like holden from catcher in the rye.

Date: 2009-11-25 02:46 pm (UTC)Twilight has some really nice names. They also happen to be really nice old-fashioned names, and old-fashioned names are popular right now. So it makes sense that names from Twilight are becoming more popular. A lot of them probably would have, even if Twilight didn't exist.
Edward used to be my favourite name for a boy. I probably won't use it now, but that's more to do with not liking any of the nicknames. Twilight wouldn't stop me from using a name. I also like Rosalie, and Esme.

Date: 2009-11-25 03:43 pm (UTC)I also love the name Esme. I think it's both cute and sophisticated. One of those names where I can picture a little girl and an old woman.
So in summation, I think there are a lot more strange odd names. :)

Date: 2009-11-25 04:29 pm (UTC)She's most definitely not named after the character, but I did discover the name while reading Twilight and I don't care who knows it. IMO, even though the series is pretty much literary garbage, all of the names used are really awesome, classic names.

Date: 2009-11-25 06:37 pm (UTC)My husband and I confessed that neither of us were set with our baby name, it wasn't sticking like last time so he wanted me to look up more girl names, I joked about naming her after Twilight since I've read and like the books and he's watched the first movie and is interested in watching the others and reading the books (he loves vampires) So he asked what girl names were in the book and I rattled off what I could remember. Oddly enough, we both took a liking for Esme.
I still asked for help, looked at hundreds of names, wrote down what I liked, paired them with our last name, and we considered them all.... We're keeping our original name as the middle name and adding Esme as her first name; they're both French and sound well together. I'm prepared for any possible Twilight questions, I don't care. I never would have noticed the name if it wasn't for Twilight but I'm not OMG TWILIGHT LOVE so it's certainly not named AFTER, people can think that if they want, but *shrugs* Whatever, I already get questions about the bible when certain people learn my son's name is Elijah, at least I actually know something about Twilight, HAHAHA.

Date: 2009-11-25 11:10 pm (UTC)My number one girl name is Valentina. I met a lady named Valentina, and that was the first time I ever heard it. She hated it and always went by Tina. I loved the name when I heard it, but it was sort of on the guilty pleasure list because I figured if she hated it, everyone else would, too. Then that actress named her daughter Valentina, and I liked it even more but still left it on my GP's for a year or more. I recently read a book where one of the main characters is Valentina. While the book was just alright, It definately put Valentina from my GP list all the way up to number one on my favorites. I am not expecting, but if I were to have a girl I will use it, and I don't care if people will think I either got it from Salma Hayek or the book.
So if you love Jasper, go for it!
I had a cat named Jasper, so I always think of that more than anything else when I hear it.
