unusual boys names
Nov. 15th, 2009 08:29 pmToying with these names lately:
Kai
Blaise
Asher
Vaughn
Shea (or Shay - though my DH thinks this sounds like a girl's name)
Boaz
WDYT? And are there any additional, similar names that you might add? I just feel that I see the same boys names repeated again and again and I'm interested in some variety to chose from.

Date: 2009-11-16 01:34 am (UTC)Hate Blaise... sounds like a stoner.
I think Asher is cute.
Vaughn sounds like an old man name to me but it's not awful.
I like Shay but it is for sure a girls name to me. I think of an all girl group named Shaye, after a female.
I hate Boaz.. Im not even sure how you would say it BOZE or Bow-azz? Either way I think it's awful.

Date: 2009-11-16 04:27 am (UTC)Blaise is a little over-the-top, imo. Kind of a stripper name, even on a boy.
Asher, I like okay. Not a favorite, but it has a nice sound, it's modern and stylish but not super common.
Vaughn I just don't like at all. It's ugly-looking, ugly-sounding, and it's a last name, not a first name.
I like Shea a lot, but I have to say I'm with the DH. It sounds feminine to me. I know it isn't. In Scotland (Ireland?) it's a traditional boy's name. But we're not in Scotland. Names starting in "Sh" tend to sound feminine here.
Boaz comes with the very appealing nickname Bo. In its full form, though, I find it to be almost a character of a hick name. Some kid in overalls learning to drive a tractor. Frankly, I have a soft spot for hick culture. But I still don't like Boaz.
So, of your choices here, the only one I recommend is Asher. Other suggestions: Shane, Bryce, Finn, Archer, Rhys/Reece, Zane, Reid, Tate, Ari, Cade.

Date: 2009-11-16 04:35 am (UTC)Blaise- I love this name but my husband makes Dodgeball references every time I bring it up.
Asher- I'm not a fan.
Vaughn- Also not a fan.
Shea/Shay- I like it. I think Shea come off a little less feminine than Shay.
Boaz- I think of snakes...

Asher - LOVE!!!
Vaughn - I like it as a middle name. Very underused in my country
Shea - it's ok
Boaz - cool sounding
As mentioned by another poster, they do kinda sound like surfer names... I always pictured my own yet-to-be firstborn son Asher as a blonde haired surfer boy.
Other names that I think are surfer-type:
Taj
Bohdi
Garett
Tate/Taite
Lee/Leigh
Orson
Sean/Shaun
Rafe
Xander
Xavier
Jesse
Bran/Brand/Brandt

Date: 2009-11-16 07:52 am (UTC)Blaise- I don't really like. For some reason, this name seems snobby to me, haha.
Asher- I kind of like. Someone above mentioned skateboarders, and I agree with this one. Either that, or a surfer.
Vaughn- Don't really like.
Shea/Shay- Though I sometimes shorten my name to Shay, I definitely consider it a boy's name. (It's Irish.) I generally see this on boys and when it isn't- the girl is American. I like it on boys, not on girls.
Boaz- I really don't like this one. Makes me think of the "Ten Inch Hero" character. :)

Date: 2009-11-16 05:04 pm (UTC)A girl I went to school with has a brother named Blaise... he also has red hair, so he got "Blaze" comments alot in school lol.
One of my bff's from school has a son named Asher. I love the name.
Vaughn- I love. It's a name we threw around for our daughter before we found out she was a girl.
I agree that Shea/Shay is a girl's name. I don't like it on a boy much.
Boaz- I don't like at all. I want to say it like Boa's, like the plural of Boa.

Date: 2009-11-16 05:16 pm (UTC)Blaise - I can see where someone said this name made them think of someone snobby. It is a sort of uppercrust name. It actually makes me think of Blaise Zambini in Harry Potter.
Asher - It's okay.
Vaughn - Part of me kind of likes it, but it has a kind of skatery sound to it.
Shea/Shay - I used to really like it. I'm not really into it anymore, but it would be cool to see someone use it on a boy.
Boaz - This makes me think of feather boas, first and foremost. Probably NOT what you want people to think of when they hear your son's name. It also makes me think of snakes.

Vaughn is nice too.
Asher is cute, and you could call him Ash for short. I like.
