Church Roster

I teach the 7year-olds at my church and thought I'd share the names of all the kids on the roster, as a sort of cross-section of society, This Is What We're Naming Our Kids. Some of these are nicknames, I'm sure, but it's what the child goes by.

I'm not really down with this trend of naming children McKenna, McKinzie, McKenzie and so on. To me McK is more surname rather than first name.

I agree. As others have said before me, it's a child, not a Happy Meal. I like McKenna better than some, though. I guess because it ends in "a" it feels more like a name.

I cannot explain Alexiss, I'm afraid. Kemp I believe is a family name, mother's maiden name or something. Still an ugly-butt name, in my opinion. Cute kid, though.

The weird thing about Andie is that she is the frilliest little princess ever. Part of it may be her inborn personality, but she's only 5. She's not the one who picks out the gorgeous pageant-worthy church dresses. She's not the one who braids flowers into her hair. I have no problem with raising a girl to be hyper-girly, and I have no problem with giving her a spunky androgynous name... I just can't understand why you would do both.

I'm not sure if his is short for Wesley or Weston or what, but surely it's short for something. I like Wes a lot as a nickname, but it's too chopped-off to be a full name.

Wes is very strange sounding as a stand-alone name. Never thought of Weston as being a first name - I like that a lot more than Wesley.

Nell is named after her Grandma Nellie, which I think is adorable.

The only names I really hate out of the bunch are Kemp (because it's ugly) and Hartley (because it's girly).
