[identity profile] thefadingshadow.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
Our surame is King, and my husband keeps nay-ing every single boy's name I suggest, because he comes up with reasons it won't work with King. For example, Jonah = Joe = Joe King = Joking. Levi = Le Viking. Cameron = Cam = Cam King which is apparently some kind of camera shop reference. Charlie = Chuck King. Ethan King = He Thinking.. it goes on and on and on, even ones I don't think anybody would ever dream up, he manages to find some reason why it's not good. The only one so far he hasn't been able to discount on the basis of our last name is Seth and he "doesn't like that one much."

So, help! What are some names that would work? Richard, Alan, Jack, George, William, Scott, Kevin, John, Jeff and Robert are all out because these are names of close family members and we don't want to name the baby after anyone to avoid people fighting.

I'd prefer something a little bit original/not too popular, but don't want any -aden names and any too-made-up names.

Help! Whatcha got? Anything to get my mind going would be helpful/appreciated.

LOL. I just died from laughter reading what you had in parenthesis then saying the name out loud =)

Hahahaha, I know! I as like, huh...there's nothing weird about Liam. But then as I was typing it, it dawned on me that the kid I know named Liam gets called Lee by some of his family and that would be fucking HYSTERICAL.

Unfortunately I can think of ways he can shoot down all of those... the last one is pretty cute, actually: Pierce King -> Pierskin -> bearskin ;)

Why don't you just not call your kids any of those nicknames (Joe, Cam, Chuck)?

Date: 2006-06-27 08:43 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] missamerican.livejournal.com
Other people may start the nicknames- which is something I dread with a lengthier name.

Alistair King?

Our last name has a few restrictions, but not as much as King.

Our last name is Dunn and the only one I can think of off the top of my head is Benjamin/Ben. I really, really love the name, but 'Ben Dunn' sounds like 'been done' ie: 'It's already been done' etc.

A few that haven't been mentioned yet up there:

Jared
Bailey [as long as 'Bay' isn't a nickname ;P]
Morgan
Devon
Bradley
Justin
Aaron
Andrew

Owen is the name we're naming our son, so of course I like that. I also like the name Seth that I see you have up there =)

Good luck! =)

i cant think of any names, but you could remind him that in elementary school, kids arent really going to put two n two together. and once in middle school, if it is a cool thing they make up, as in Levi = Le Viking. it will become his nickname. which isnt such a bad thing:-)

Did he ever see the Saturday Night Live skit (originally airing in 1992) about the couple (Nic Cage and Julia Sweeney) who were trying to name their child? The wife kept suggesting names and the husband kept shooting them all down...

You can read it here (http://www.cagebypage.com/images_art/snl/snl_3.html) (although a lot of the humor depends on the husband's delivery of the crucial line). I will just say that he should be glad his name is just Steven. ;)

Ok, here's my input. If your son is named Cameron, and you don't give him a nickname, he probably will not give one to himself. My boss's son is Benjamin, and everyone calls him Benjamin, because THAT'S HIS NAME!

If someone randomly gives him the nickname Cam, even if he LET'S them call him that, they're not going to say Cam King very often. He'll be introducing himself as Cameron, so any potential bullies will be trying too hard to be hurtful. Imagine this UNLIKELY scenario when he introduces himself as Cameron King.

Bully who happens to be smart with letters: "Cameron King? *guffaw* oh, like Came Ronking? That's so dumb!!"
Cameron King: "What?"
Bully: "Your name is Came Ronking!" *guffaw*
Cameron King: "What is 'came ronking'?"
Bully: *period of silence* "It sounds dumb!"
Cameron King: "You sound dumb. Besides, you can call me Cam. Like a camera store. Cam King.

*bullying ends, as child can also laugh at himself. (unlike his daddy!)*

Sorry, I came up with something else. When I say the surname King with any name that doesn't end in a c, k, or ck sound, there is too much of a space between the words as my tongue moves to pronounce the k in king. Especially with Ethan, which is a great name! The enunciation is on the E in Ethan, not the than. It's not e-thanking (or thinking or whatever) it's EE-than (it doesn't sound like an I to me!) King.

Oliver King- Ollie King?- sounds fine to me!
Toby King
George King- one of my friends is George King & his parents thought it would be funny to give him the middle name Ian. Georgian King! (His girlfriend is devestated as they cant name their daughter Ophelia King "i feel ya king" lol
Robert King- I have a friend called Bobby King- actually Rob King, like a modern day Robin Hood!

My favourite is Alexander King/Alex King. I think it sounds very dignified & not at all funny.

My boyfriend's last name has the exact same problem. Dawn = daunting, May = mating.. etc. So many names become words with his LN, and the usable names have all been taken by his many cousins! I don't have any suggestions but just couldn't help adding that comment :P you're not alone
