[identity profile] ohhvelocitygirl.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I posted on facebook how I hate names that aren't really names.  I posted it because this girl I went to school with named her son "jaxxyn".  they call him jaxx which is a cool nickname, but no... just no.  so my niece's mom oldest sister (I've never talked to her before) sent me this scathing message about how I shouldn't make fun her son's name and blah blah blah.  I was about to defend myself but then I saw that her son's name is "jiraiya".  I made a face at it, but googled it just to see if maybe it was a real name.  it's not.  it's a cartoon character.

bonus name fun!  I have to take this stupid parenting class because me and my ex don't agree on anything so I guess this was "the middle ground"?  anyway aside from everyone there being like 19 with 7 kids, there's this guy who sits next to me and his daughter is "prycious" and his son is "shawn shaun" because "we couldn't agree on a spelling".  and then he scoffed at my daughter's name, so I told him my phone kept auto correcting his daughter's name.  we don't sit next to each other anymore.

tl;dr

I actually like Jackson (spelled like that) but Jaxxyn is too odd for me.
Jiraiya made me LOL because he's from Naruto.
Why couldn't they name the daughter Precious is beyond me.

Jax just makes me think of Sons of Anarchy:) All of those names are horrible and it sounds like you unfortunately live in a very stupid city:(

And Shawn Shaun is raw, huh? Yup, you can totally tell he's from the hood??? And Prycious is the next Rhianna, JLo, or something, right?

He totally looks like a Shawn Shaun, too!

I wonder if he will use the pick up line, "so nice they named me twice"

Adria is pretty. Jaxxyn, Prycious and Shawn Shaun are so full of fail that I need some eye bleach.

Jiraiya is an anime character, true, but it's also a name with a lot of history behind it - Jiraiya was a character from plays back during the Edo period of Japan, and they based the character in the anime off of him. Yeah, it's likely she got it from the anime, but it IS a real name.

I have nothing to say about the other ones, though. :/

I was about to say that. Anime names don't sprout from nowhere (well, most of the time they don't); they just use regular names on the characters. Besides, before Jiraiya from Naruto, there was a Jiraiya on a TV show from the 80s.

Prycious and Shawn Shaun are both very stupid names.

I just happened to wonder over to your journal and saw you're in Columbus too. Now those names don't surprise me too much. I've seen some quite awful ones in Columbus Public Schools.

wow... just... ew... people. This is why sometimes I find myself being such a misanthrope... really.

I really like Adria though, I would never be able to use it but it's a nice name none the less.

I couldn't use it because it reminds me of the word Arida in Spanish btw, same with Viola... lovely names in English but don't work so well in my first language.

And people can say to me what they want... babies having babies tends to lead to nothing good (said because of your 19 year old with 7 kids comment).

even though I think you had your baby young were an adult by law and hey, I don't know everyone's situation or have any right to judge but really most of the time people say 'omg how can you say that?' and basically because from what I see it *tends* to lead to little good in the long run for the parents or the children. Of course not saying this is your particular case... nor are we discussing parenting here.

That being said I am glad to see the name you picked, it's nice, not overly common, spelled correctly and well a lovely name all around.

I think that's awesome because that is what I see a lot in teens and hell even in older women... some people don't realize that your life changes when you have a child and it's not a toy, not something you can put down or leave with someone else for a while to go out and do some hard partying and come back drunk in the wee hours of the morning. It's sad to see kids go through that and be raised basically by grandparents who may be glad to do it but they are older and already raised their children (well... barely in some case). Though just form reading what you've posted you seem to understand the responsibility and being a grown up not only comes with age but also with the mentality to be responsible to know that life does change after a child.

Sorry, long rant lol.

jaxxyn is awful. Jackson would have been better. Jaxx as a nickname is fine. I would prefer Jax, though. I like using the correct spellings. There's really no need for two x's, other than just to look cool, which isn't that bad. At least you can pronounce it.
Jiraiya- I figured if anything, this would be a made-up girl's name. I know NOTHING about anime, though.
Prycious- Just name her Precious. At least she won't always have to be correcting everyone. (I do think it's a horrible name either way, though)
Shawn Shaun- Wow, just wow. Both are correct and fine spellings. Couldn't they just pick one? Seriously. At least they could agree on a name.
Adria is lovely, BTW

Ugh. I hate Jaxxyn. I know a couple who named their son Jaxxon Michael because "Michael Jackson would be TOO obvious!" They call him Jaxx. Pretty much a WTF name by my standards.

I LOLed at keeping a name "raw"! What the heck does that even mean?

Jaxxyn made me scoff-laugh, lol. O_o; That's horrible.

Jiraiya, seriously? Lol! It's a legit Japanese name, but it's not a common one, so I'm betting she stole it from the anime... >_>

Prycious is a horrible non-name, even spelled correctly.

Shawn shaun? WHA-T? So just because they couldn't decide, their poor child has to suffer? That's messed up, parents! :C

Although I know that they're both become accepted spellings of Sean, I still think of Shawn and Shaun as misspellings by people who don't get that Sean is pronounced the same way.

It is ludicrous to call a child Shawn Shaun - I can't even look at it anymore!

Jaxxyn? Wtf? Why not Jaxon, Jackson, Jaxson? And Jiraiya? I would definitely think that was a girl, and would definitely think it was totaly made up.

Shawn Shaun LOLOL

Also, Prycious would be pronounced like "PRY-shush", is that what he was going for LOL
