[identity profile] mikanala.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
Sorry for posting a few times in the last day but I only refound this community and am rather excited about it. :)

I've reaslised thers a trend with my family go by middle names rather than their first names.

I was curious if anyone else's family is like that.

I'm Alana Kim and go by Kim with all my family and Lani by my friends.

My cousin Robert Regan goes by Regan.

My Grandmar Agnes Helen goes by Helen or usually Nessie.

My grandmother is Evelyn Sue and has always gone by Sue, and two of her brothers, Billy Ross and Richard Lynn, went by Ross and Lynn, respectively. It's not really a trend for our family so much as a coincidence with hers, I think.

I love your grandmother's name, by the way!

you know, as strange as it is for me to think about, a lot of my family members actually do use their middle name.

Frank Matthew (goes by matt, my uncle)
Debra Elise (goes by elise, my aunt, BUT went by Deb/Debbie her whole life up until corporate world, where she thought Debra sounded too juvenile? everyone in the fam still calls her deb/debbie/debra)
Margaret Adelle (went by adelle, my great grandmother)
Paulette Anne (goes by anne/annie, my grandmother)
Walter Edward (went by eddie his whole life, but now goes by walter/walt, my grandfather)

my sister is Michelle Renee, and everyone calls her michelle/shelly, but for some reason i call her renee when i'm messing with her... haha, it bugs her (not in a mean/bad way) and makes her say THAT'S NOT MY NAME! which i get to say "YES IT IS!" haha... but yeah, i either call her "chica" or "renee" :P

i cant think of anyone else right now, but i think there are more people in my fam who went by middle names... if i think of them i'll post 'em :)

My grandparents both go by their middle names.
Alexander Graeme goes by Graeme
Maevis Elizabeth goes by Betty... but she hates her first name so that maybe the reason for her.

Weird! I was going to post about the only person I know who goes by his middle name (who is actually my boyfriend's cousin) .. he's a Richard Graeme, and goes by Graeme, and his sister is Maeve. Maeve =/= Maevis but close enough, hah.

You're technically not allowed to double (or triple) post in one day. It's not back to back, so I won't delete it, but please do combine them next time.

I've noticed (with people I know anyway) that this is super common in the south (I didn't see where you're from so this could be totally irrelevant). My husband goes by his middle (from Texas), my step-dad's family calls him by his middle (from Oklahoma), and they both have endless family members who also go by middles.

I'm from MA and I don't know anybody from around here who does that.

Yeah I was going to post that it seems to be a southern tradition. I know a Harold Dean who goes by Dean, a Rebecca Jean who goes by Jean, an Avery Nicol who goes by Nicci, a Mary LeAnne who goes by LeAnne, my grandpa was Elda George and he went by George. (all from Georgia, Arkansas or North Carolina)

it was a bigger trend in my family in my dad's generation than it is in mine. Most of my cousins and siblings go by our first names, but my sister is Carina Elizabeth and goes by Carrie Beth, and I think using both names is also a bit of a southern US trend.

My grandma is Josie Anne and goes by Anne, but she's the only one in my family who does. We do currently have four Josies (great-grandma, grandma, mum's cousin, my cousin), though.

It's a bit of an accidental tradition in my family. Me, my mother, and my grandmother all go by our middle names. I don't think anyone decided to do it that way, it just happened. I don't plan to continue the trend, though. I HATE the fact that I have to correct everyone on what name to call me. I've even had people think I was twins. It's a pain in the tush. My mom always hated it, too, so I don't know why she did it to me. Maybe to pay me back for being a colicky baby. :)

I think it's kind of a Southern thing, my family is from Alabama and almost everyone I've ever met who went by their middle name was from the South.

Only one person in my family does that: my Uncle Pat. His real name is Owen Patrick, but for as long as anyone can remember, he's gone by Pat. Even when my grandmother was irritated with him, she called him Patrick, not Owen.

I've also known a John James who went by Jimmy, and a James Timothy who went by Tim. And a girl I went to grade school with was named Sheila Princess, but she hated her first name so she refused to be called anything but Princess.
