What do you think of the nickname Leni for Madeleine? I really like Leni (prn like Laney), but I can't think of a full name I like as much and I don't think it stands alone well. Not a huge fan of Helena or Elena...anything else?

Or maybe just Lane? What do you think of Lane for a girl? I like it, but it might be too Gilmore Girls-y...only because Gilmore Girls is my favorite show, though so people would know exactly where I heard the name.

I nannied for a woman who was friends with a Madelane (I don't know if this is how she spelled it, but that's how it was pronounced). I can see Lane as a nn for this, but not so much from Madeleine.

Madeleine is pronounced exactly as you've spelt the friend's name.

Yep, the french spelling is prounced this way (we don't pronounce my daughter's name that way, but in France I know they would).

Leni automatically makes me think of Leni Riefenstahl, sorry. :/

Really? She was a Nazi filmmaker. It wouldn't be so bad, except I can't think of anyone else with that name.

I'd pronounce Leni like LE-nee (as in the German name, Leni), and it makes more sense to me to pronounce it that way as a nn for Madeleine too. I think it would work for a nn, but pronouncing it like Laney would be a little odd. I don't like Lane for a girl, but if it were just a nn it wouldn't be too bad.

Other fn ideas for Leni:
Elen
Eleni
Ellen
Helen, Helene (if you dislike Helena though, you probably don't like these I guess)
Lenora, Lenore
Magdalene, Madgalena
Valencia
Valentina
Yelena

Or Leni pronounced like Laney would work for Belén, Milena, or Madalena.

Leni would be pronounced LAY-nee. That's exactly how I'm pronouncing Laney.

To the OP -

I don't like Lane.

Leni is a bit beetter but for me it makes me think of Leni Riefenstahl, which is not good. But that's just me. I think it would work fine as a nn for Madeleine.

I stand corrected! Okay, then I retract that it doesn't make sense to pronounce it that way. But I still don't think it makes sense to use a nickname pronounced like Laney for a name that doesn't have the sound "lane" in it.

But Madeleine *does* have a 'lane' sound in it when I say it lol. Apparently Made-LIN is a more common pronunciation, but I've always heard it as Madeleine.

Lol I wasn't sure if I was pronouncing Laney right originally, I hate trying to spell pronunciations out. But I studied Leni Riefenstahl for my A-Levels (she was Helene) so I definitely knew how to pronounce that one :D

How about Delaney? One of my secret guilty-pleasure names, because my dad plays the Jimmy Buffet song about his daughter Delaney a lot. It's a very sweet father/daughter song (http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/Delaney-Talks-to-Statues-lyrics-Jimmy-Buffett/35AF2A29A38256FC482569A100285B01).

Delaney is a secret guilty pleasure name for me, too. :)

I'd pronounce it LEN-ee and I like it better that way.
I think it's very pretty for Madeleine!

Lane is nice, but it's more of a middle name for me.

I kind of have to like Lane, as Layne is my middle name. I don't know if I would actually care for the name otherwise, though. I obviously wanted named for Lane on GG, but once friends knew my middle name, that's what they said too, "like on Gilmore Girls?" And half of them still think it's Elaine.

I wouldn't pronounce Leni Laney at all. It looks like it should be Lenny, and that's the only way I've ever heard it said,

To me, Leni is Len-ee/Lenny.

Uh...I guess you could use Laney as a nickname, but I think it's be a bit of a stretch. I don't like that nickname much, either way. To me, Madeleine sounds pretty, whereas Laney really...doesn't. It's like going from one end of the spectrum to the other. =/

Lane, I used to really like for a boy (now I'm on the fence about it); I don't care for it on a girl.

Or it could be a nickname for Elaine? Your pronunciation of Leni (I'd say "lenny", but that's my American never-met-a-Leni bias showing) fits for that name, too. Lane is a fine nickname for it, too.

Laney could be a nickname for Melanie.

Heidi Klum's daughter is called Leni, short for Helene. I think Lane is fine as a name itself and not too many people will automatically attribute it to Gilmore Girls, unlike, say, Lorelai or Rory.

Huh, I just realized there were a lot of L names in GG.
