Mariah - love
Charity - very 80s
Alexia - this is a disorder where people are unable to process written language, akin to dyslexia. AWFUL for a name.
Billy - don't even like it on a boy
Grace - so sick of it
Claire - ok
Emma - meh
Ally - ok
Carey - ok, but prefer on a guy
Hazyl - dumb spelling
McKylah - ditto
Alexliya - TRITTO but even worse
Nataly - quadritto
Melony - meh

I like:
Grace
Claire
Emma
Ally - as a nickname
Nataly - spelled Natalie

Don't like:
Mariah
Charity
Alexia - this is the loss of the ability to read... why would anyone name their child this?
Carey - boy's name to me (also, reminds me of Drew Carey)
Hazyl - going to explain how to spell her name her whole life
McKylah - ick
Alexliya - ick times two
Melony - all I see is "melon"

Alexliya is quite a tongue twister

I really dislike the unnecessary y's. Hazel is lovely. Hazyl is awful, as is AAlexyia, McKylah and Nataly. I dislike Billy on girls. AndI have a student named Mariah and I always think of Mariah Carey.

Melony isn't bad, I guess. I love Grace and Claire.

Mariah - Good
Charity - Not my style
Alexia - I prefer Alexis, but this is ok.
Billy - Please, no. Billy is a boy's name.
Grace - I love this.
Claire - I love this one, too.
Emma - This is great.
Ally - The spelling is like a back ally. You could use the name Allison and the nickname Ali.
Carey - Spelled this way, I consider it a boy's name.
Hazyl - Why? What is wrong with Hazel?
McKylah - Again, why? What is wrong with Michaela?
Alexliya - I don't even know how to pronounce this.
Nataly - Again, the spelling is strange. Natalie is much better.
Melony - I ~much~ prefer Melody.

Date: 2009-10-28 01:12 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] arbus.livejournal.com
no, michaela is how i was trying to spell it. correctly. because thats the proper spelling of that name.

ok, i see that it is supposed to be pronounced differently. thats a relief, but i still dont like it. sorry.

"for one McKayla is how you were trying to spell it."

Wow. That is a bold statement right there.

Actually, that would be "alley."
An "ally" is a friend.

I agree with you on the spelling, though.

Yes to: Alexia, Grace, Claire, Emma, Ally
No to the rest, especially Alexliya because unless it is a cultural/family name, it seems like it would be difficult for most people to pronounce

Not bad.
Not bad.
Hell no.
I prefer Billie.
Okay.
Love.
Overly popular, but a good name.
Love. But not as a standalone name.
Boy's name.
Unnecessary Y. The E is fine.
No.
No.
No. Unnecessary Y.
It's just asking for the kid to be called Melonhead or Felony her whole life.

No offense, but I pretty much hate every name on that list. I suppose we just have a very different taste in names!
As someone in this community said one time, Melony sounds like an adjective you'd use to desribe some sort of juice.
Hazel is beautiful, Hazyl is...misspelled and trendy. Alexia is nice too...but Alexliya looks a little messed up. I don't think it's a name.
As for McKylah...did you know the 'Mc' part means 'son of'?

i like claire, emma and grace.

i also like hazel. hazyl is dumb and unnecessary.

billie is cute, i knew a girl named that in college.

the last four are travesties. whats with all the extraneous y's?

natalie is nice though.

(also, i am a carrie!)

oops meant to add... carey is typically either the masculine spelling (along with kerry and cary) or a last name.

Any mispelled names like Hazyl and Nataly are uneeded, trendy and not cute.

Any made up names like McKyla, Alexliya and Melony are LOL worthy.

Decent names: Grace, Claire, Emma, Ally, Alexia

The others, Mariah, Charity, Billy (too masculine), and Carey are just not my taste and I'm not a fan of them.

And yes, I DID read the post that you just posted, and I don't care. You post names and you ask for opinions, then deal with them.

Mariah - pretty but nms
Charity - ditto
Alexia - hideous
Billy - I don't even like it as a nick for William
Grace - pretty but overdone
Claire - love it
Emma - pretty but overdone
Ally - Like the Allies in WWII?
Carey - Carrie would be okay, this looks like a boy's name.
Hazyl - Hazel is one of my favorites, but Hazyl is heinous
McKylah - just no.
Alexliya - looks like you're trying too hard or making up names in a science fiction novel
Nataly - Natalie is lovely. This isn't.
Melony - Melanie is lovely. This isn't.

So I'll put in my two cents, after reading your second post.

Mariah--not too bad, but for many it will always bring the singer to mind. Whether this is a positive or negative image is up to you.

Charity--I can't bring myself to hate this one. I've always liked the way it sounds.

Alexia--pretty, but many might associate it with dyslexia. You said you liked Y's. How about Alexy? Or maybe even Alexa?

Billy--sort of cute as a nickname. I'd want a fuller name on the birth certificate. Which, I'm not sure...

Grace--used to be such a pretty name to me. Sadly now it's passed into cliche, and in a few years there will be classrooms with 5 or 6 Graces each.

Claire--love it!

Emma--used to like it more, it's become a bit overdone but it's still pretty.

Ally--again, cute as a nickname for Alexandra, Allison, maybe even Alexia/Alexy/Alexa.

Carey--never seen this spelling as a female or male name, actually. I've only seen it as a surname, but I think it could work.

Hazyl--my thoughts on Hazel notwithstanding, the Y looks ugly to me in there. Again, that's just my opinion, which you did ask for.

McKylah--this name could grow on me. The only thing that bothers me, honestly, is the spelling--specifically the Mc, because it means 'son of' and thus has masculine connotations. Would you perhaps consider Makyla/Makylah as an alternate suggestion?

Alexliya--this one's a bit of a tongue-twister. May sound good in theory, but in practice it will be hard for the child and her teachers alike to pronounce it. Just something to consider it.

Nataly--I love Natalie. Nataly with a Y, though, just looks off. My inclination would be to pronounce it 'nuh-TA-lee' with emphasis on the second syllable. But if you like it, go for it. Anything's better than Natalee...

Melony--just curious about the O there. Why not Melany? Obviously I prefer Melanie, but if you're going for the Y theme, Melany looks slightly more pleasing to the eye than Melony. Also, it could be mistaken easily for Maloney, a surname that is not pronounced the same way. One other thing to mention: spelling it that way may doom her to being called 'Melon' on the playground. Kids can make horrible nicknames out of anything, but why make it easier for them?

Just my thoughts. Take them with a grain of salt, if necessary.

Mariah - its not usually my style but i quite like it
Charity - i hate it.
Alexia - love it.
Billy - i have a cousin with this name (but spelt Billie) and it totally suits her, but i dislike the name in general
Grace - LOVELOVELOVE
Claire - like a lot
Emma - like
Ally - LOVELOVE. especially as a nn for Alicia or Alyssa.
Carey - like a lot spelt Carrie, not too keen on this spelling but its not terrible.
Hazyl - i'm not a fan of Hazel, and dislike this spelling even more than the original one.
McKylah - hate this.
Alexliya - i can't work out how this is pronounced?
Nataly - prefer Natalie, but its nice all the same
Melony - hate hate hate this spelling. and the name in general

I'll also give my views after reading your second post...

Mariah - I like it, although I do associate it with the singer.

Charity - I don't like this, becuase I don't like the associations of the word. It's too "puritan" like Chastity would be.

Alexia - I know it is the inability to read, but even still I like the name. I like it better than Alexis or Alicia. Probably wouldn't use it myself though.

Billy - Agree that it should be Billie to make it "girly". I know you like Y's but in a name that is already masculine I think it just makes it too much.

Grace - Good name, very popular now. Not my style, and I wouldn't use it, but I do think it is classy.

Claire - Ditto to Grace. Also I have a cousin Claire and it fits her very well.

Emma - Ditto to Grace and Claire. Ha - interesting that these names were tallied as the most liked of your list originally, I think I like them the least.

Ally - I like this as a nickname. Maybe for Allyson/Allison?

Hazyl - I actually don't mind the Y in this name, I feel it looks nicer than Hazel. I have personal bad associations with the name, but otherwise do like it.

McKylah - I like the pronounciation Ma-Kai-Luh better than McKaylah, but I worry that she would be correcting people all the time since MyKayla is so much more common. I like the nick name possibility of Kylie.

Alexliya - I am pronouncing this either as Alix-ee-a or Alix-lee-ia. The second one I feel is a real tongue twister. I don't like this as much as Alexia.

Nataly - Natalie is one of my favorite names. Nataly just looks incomplete to me.

Melony - Definitely like Melody better. I am not sure I like this name, regardless of the spelling. I am not really a fan of Melonie either.

Somehow Carey got lost in my first reply. Weird.

Carey - Ditto to Billy. It's already a masculine/unisex name and I think the 'ie' makes it officially girly. Carrie, Billie, Bobbie would be girls, Carey, Billy, Bobby would be boys. The Y's there just make it boys names, not that I am against Y's in general.

Mariah - Because of Mariah Carey it is eh, but I've seen it on little girls and it's quite cute

Charity - Outdated. Names that mean other things are annoying.
"Giving to charity" okay, but naming a child Charity, no.

Alexia - No. It's like a female version of Alex, and I find Alex an ugly male name so this is just bad.

Billy - Billy Idol? Billy Joel? Billie Holiday? Short for William? Just, no.

Grace - It's hardly acceptable as a middle name....

Claire - Preppy and popular. Not a fan

Emma - The only name I really love and would actually consider using. It's very sweet.

Ally - As in "you're my ally in the war?" Or pronounced like "Back alley abortion?"

Carey - Drew Carey. Jim Carey. Mariah Carey. All sounds the same...dear lord don't name two girls Mariah and Carey!!!

Hazyl - If you like Y so much, pick a REAL name that has a Y in it. They are out there. Yevette comes to mind, but baby books and websites are everywhere with thousands of names in them, I'm sure you can find some decent Y names so you don't have to ruin perfectly good names.

McKylah - Dytto

Alexliya - And I though Alexia was bad....

Nataly - Wash, rinse, repeat. Natalie is a beautiful name, stop screwing up beautiful names. You do realize your daughter would be explaining this one to every single person she ever had to deal with, right? Do you hate your future daughter that much?

Melony - Is this even a real name? At least go with Melody, it's hippy, but at least it's a real name. If you want to invent something, okay, but it shouldn't be names.
