A typical work day
Oct. 21st, 2009 06:05 pmHere is a list of just a few of the names I've run across in my work this month (for those who missed my intro post, I'm a birth certificate clerk).
I purposefully tried to pick a mix of names, from some I thought were horrible, to some I actually like. And one is a bonus my "favorite" weird name of all time. So far. I've also marked them as male and female. Because sometimes you can't tell.
Mi'Taurus Ty'Miracle (F)
Charity Rose (F)
Tyler Lane (M)
Kinsley Laverne (F)
LaDarrinesha Patrice (F)
O'Mari Zayd (M)
Kah'Pe'driyoun J'vearye (M)
Kali'a Renee (F)
Kingston Gerard (M)
Haley Marie (F)
Jaiden DeWayne (M)
James Maurice (M)
Ricky Dale (M)
Kolby James (M)
Coral (no middle name) (F)
Uriah Noelle (F)
Kayleigh Danielle (F)
Thomas Alexander (M)
Rome Andrew (M)
Those are just a few, and the month isn't over yet. I will swear by whatever deity you like that every single one of these names is real, something a parent or couple of parents named their child.

Date: 2009-10-21 11:30 pm (UTC)Last time I talked about the names I come across in my work, someone called me racist, telling me I was perpetuating stereotypes by sharing "urban legends" as fact. Nothing I said could convince this person I wasn't lying, and that no, really, people do name their kids this stuff. I didn't even try to explain that white people name their kids this kind of stuff too, because that would have only proven to them somehow that I'm racist.
:/ I'm more classist. It's not the race, honestly. It's ignorance and a lack of education.

Date: 2009-10-21 11:37 pm (UTC)But still, I'd bet money that LaDarrinesha Patrice is black. And I don't worry about anyone telling me I'm racist as I'm half black, LOL:)

Date: 2009-10-21 11:46 pm (UTC)It's being, again, ignorant and uneducated and, worse, doing absolutely nothing about it. Having absolutely no desire to better themselves. That's what really gets me, the people who don't want to be better than they are, who honestly want to just continue for the rest of their lives milking the system.
Oooh, see, I'd like to talk to you, because I'm sure you have some very unique perspectives. I'm as white as they come, and I know this comes with a certain view of the world. I'm sure you could share observations from both the black and the white perspective. I used to work with a woman who was half white half black, and she worked with me, and another black lady. I saw a very marked difference in the way she interacted with the other lady, and with me, and I always wondered what it was like to grow up as her.
And LaDarrinesha Patrice is one of the ones I don't think is so bad, mostly because I had a friend in high school named Patrice. ^_^

Date: 2009-10-22 12:04 am (UTC)For me, I really had no contact with the black/native american side of my family. That was my father, he was not a good person and the entire family was, well, on the wrong side of the law, to put it nicely. So I grew up with my white mom, grandma, and aunt. I have a few vague memories of my paternal grandma before she died, but I actually grew up with a fear of black men since I was afraid of my father. It's gone now, but I'm definitely white. I see myself as more white and I don't like a lot of things that might be considered "black" or ya know, that only they would like, and Ebonics makes me want to scream. But I have DEFINITELY noticed that black people will treat me differently, they talk to me differently. I'm like automatically in their inner circle, one of them, a "sista" White people treat me normally, I can't say I've ever had to deal with racism, but in Northern California I really don't feel racism is that prominent; or at least those that are just keep to themselves and aren't vocal about it. But everywhere I've lived, there hasn't been a large black population so if racism, slavery, anything black history related comes up, I'm suddenly singled out by white people, they look to me to know how to approach it, like my teacher that asked what I liked to be called. I said Savanah, LOL, but he wanted to know if it was colored, black, african, african american, etc. I told him I consider myself just me, not any certain race, I have way too many races in my heritage to identify with any one, and my native american side intrigues me the most.
I grew up poor, and I'm still pretty poor. But I've never accepted to be low class. I manage to have fairly nice things, not great, but nice, I might slang my words together too much (I really need to stop saying "yer" instead of "your"), but I can speak proper english and just generally have more class than most poor people will have. My mom and even my husband say I'll just never be happy with what I have but I feel I just refuse to accept this "poor life" as my life. I don't need or want to be rich, but it would be wonderful to say, live in an area with people on the same social class and education level. I'm tired of looking around at these people milking the system and thinking, god, I live with these people, am I no better?

Date: 2009-10-22 12:45 am (UTC)I also had a lady once who had named her little boy a fairly normal name, but then her mother showed up and convinced her to change the name to "Darkedrius" or "Darkedrion," (Dar-key-dree-us, Dar-key-dree-on) one of the two. And when she saw it on the birth certificate, she started to dance around saying "Gotta have the crazy name, those crazy names go places!" And I thought... "Go where? Right back in this hospital in 15 years, the father of another baby, no education, no job, no way of supporting the kid he helped make?" I just... I couldn't understand where she thought this name was going to help her grandchild go. :/ Applications for jobs? It's very unfortunate, but also true, that a great deal of employers will take one look at that name and set that application in the reject pile without ever reading it. And I have heard some of the black women, or their families, say a name is "too white." What is a "too white" name? A name that's going to project an aura of education is "too white"? (Also, if you ask a white woman for name suggestions, you're probably going to get "white" names... though I do try to toss in names that aren't necessarily "white" but aren't bad names, either... Derrick, Dewayne, LaTonya, Keisha, Marcus, names like that.)
I can tell just from talking to you over the internet that you're a very classy person, so keep on not accepting being low-class... you're not. I understand the concept of being happy with what you have, but there's nothing wrong with wanting more education, and wanting to be financially comfortable, either. I know exactly what you mean by that, because I'm the same way. I don't want a fancy car or a mansion, but I would like to be able to purchase a small home for myself (I need a bedroom, a bathroom, and an office... maybe a living room, because with my own place I might have friends over, but I don't need a kitchen because I hate to cook... so, yeah, I'd probably need to eat out a lot, too. XD), I'd need a functioning vehicle... and you know, to be able to pay my bills.
I'm about 1/16th (or something) Native American, but you would never know to look at me. Light brown hair, blue/green eyes, pale skin. My mom looks more the part, and I have no idea how my biological father's recessive coloring beat out her dominant genetics, but apparently they did. My aunt looks more like my mom than my mom. ^_^ I don't even know what tribe my great-great grandmother was, but it would be nice to, and maybe not knowing is why I haven't felt more drawn to it. Do you know what tribe your Native American heritage comes from? I know, I'm asking a lot of questions.
One more: Woudl you mind if I friended you?

Date: 2009-10-22 01:10 am (UTC)My uncle's second wife is Keisha...she's white, I never really thought of it as a non white name, heh.
I've never understood single people having, like, 2, 3+ bedrooms. WHY? You have yourself, maybe a S/O...do you really need that many rooms? I'm on my third child, I could use a three or four bedroom! I just recently moved out of a one bedroom. Oi! I just want one bedroom per child, a car that has been made within the decade, and a fenced back yard with maybe a pool. And the ability to pay all bills, and to have cable again, LOL. Oh, and a cell phone, a cell phone would be nice, bwhahaha. My husband didn't come from the best family and he never really thought about having anything more, but I've really awakened a need to better himself. He has a higher education, but picked the wrong career, the pay is just pitiful, so he's actually enlisted in the Navy. It's really given him a drive he didn't have before.
My son has a different father, but a similar heritage to my husband, German. Yet my son looks a lot like me, he's a bit darker with brown eyes and brown wavy hair. When my daughter came out, she was so white, I couldn't believe it. She looked like my blonde haired, blue eyed SIL, not me. She has light brown eyes, I thought they might be hazel for awhile, and curly blonde hair and creamy white skin. I couldn't even believe it. And I am very curious as to what our second daughter will look like.
It's kind of neat, depending on how I do my hair I can look more native american, white, black, and sometimes even mexican, even there is no latino heritage there. I'm not sure what percentage of native american I am, but I know my paternal grandfather was full cherokee and his wife was half black and half NA, a mix of chawcata (sp) and blackfoot.
I've thanked my mom several times for raising me "white" and giving me a normal name. One of my middle names is Wavie, which is odd, but is a paternal family name, so I like it, it's cool, it has a nice history to it. But I ended up with my father's last name at his request. His...threat, actually. Even though he was too busy banging another chick to be at the hospital when I was born. And, heck, even had another lady knocked up at the same time as my mom, only she miscarried late in the pregnancy. Some men, ya know? Ugh, they demand the kids have their names or whatever yet are just the lowest pieces of crap around.

Date: 2009-10-22 01:29 am (UTC)See, I've never met a white Keisha. But along the lines of you talking about there being a low population of black people in all the places you've lived, I live in the South, and there have always been a lot of black people around me. Yet, I've also been fairly... hmm... "sheltered" from black culture. Which isn't really hard, because there's an almost voluntary segregation going on, not that anyone would call it that. I did have black friends in school, but I'm pretty sure they tended to be the black people who were considered more "white" in attitude. And I've noticed that certain young white people who hang out with certain young black people have to have a "black" attitude in order to fit in. (Now I'm starting to get paranoid that someone is going to pop up and call me racist again.)
Do you ever feel called toward one tribe more than the others? Or are you interested in learning about all three?
How many middle names do you have? I've notice that trend, too, though I didn't choose any of those names for my list. Lots of people are giving their kids more than one middle name. Usually two. I can't say I like the trend, because it can be hard enough to come up with two names that sound good together, let alone three or more! And I have strict syllable rules that must be followed! ;o)
His threat, huh? Hmph. I'm very glad for you that this man hasn't been a very present part of your life.
(Fun stories: my co-worker once did a pair of birth certificates for two babies with the same father... the mothers had their babies a day apart, and were both in the hospital at the same time, KNEW about each other, and both still insisted on putting him on the birth certificates. Story number two: I did a pair of birth certificates for two women sharing the same last name. One women put the father on the birth certificate, and he gave me a different address from hers. The second lady chose not to put a father on the birth certificate... but the address she gave me as hers was the exact same address the man for the other birth certificate had given me for his address. No details known there, but that's certainly enough information for me to come up with a good theory on what was going on.)

Date: 2009-10-22 01:52 am (UTC)Condoms really aren't that expensive! But I know how men can be, that's why I'm currently pregnant, lol.
There are a lot of Mexicans here, I remember the same segregation in high school. The Mexican kids never hung out with anyone else. I had a Mexican friend in junior high, she was pretty much the only one who would hang out with other races, but she left before high school. Luckily it doesn't seem to transfer into adult life and the majority of our friends are Mexican. Our daughter's middle name comes from one of them:) Which is interesting as my friend had the same name, Rosie.
I don't really have a pull towards any of them. Just Native American history in general I was more interested in than the other parts of history in school. I always drove my teachers crazy asking "what were the 'indians' doing at this time? Just hanging out in those reserves? Something had to have been happening!" hahaha. I just didn't like that it was simply, we came, we killed them, we stuck them on reservations, we kicked them off of reservations, we put them back on other reservations, now they own casinos.
My name is Savanah Waive Marie. My mom said she just liked the way Marie sounded with it. I've given both my kids two middle names and plan on the third as well. I just liked having two myself so I've passed that on, I've never known it to be a trend outside of, like, celebrities. My son, as my husband HATES and will say, has a "low class" middle name(s) Elijah Rafe BoDien. *shrugs* I wanted two middle names, but had NO IDEA what to call him besides Elijah, my mom requested Rafe, and I said, okay, one more left; so she picked it. I don't think it's horrible, it certainly makes it unique *shrugs* My daughter is Amelia Rose Marie and our new baby will be Colette Isabel Viola.

Date: 2009-10-22 09:59 am (UTC)Does it have anything to do with "I'm allergic to latex"? That's how my co-worker ended up with a grandson. ^_^
Just Native American history in general I was more interested in than the other parts of history in school.
Ah, okay. :) And yeah, it's never that simple. History can be very one-sided. I imagine you'd have to take both sides of the story and smush them together to get something even resembling the truth of what actually happened. You're right, though, learning what the Native Americans were doing through all of this (other than being jerked around here and there) would be really interesting.
Hmmm. See, your name and those of your two current children (depending on how Waive is pronounced) actually follow my (very personal, not for everyone) syllable rules: each name, or at least two of the three, has to have a different number of syllables, and at least one should be only one or two syllables. The way I'm pronouncing "Waive" in my head, it has one syllable, so your name is three, one, two. Elijah Rafe BoDien is three, one, two as well. Amelia can be three or four depending on pronunciation.
For me, when you get names with the same number of syllables together it doesn't sound right most of the time. I've seen exceptions, but not many. In Colette Isabel Viola, Isabel and Viola have the same number of syllables, but it's not bad. At least the names go together, they all have a kind of old-fashioned sound to them, which is beautiful. That's my other problem with three or more names, is most of what I've seen, people choose names that seem completely random, probably chosen to appease various family members and not because the parents actually like them. Most of what I see are things like... LaTeraneisha TyDarreanna Fayetta, which all have too many syllables, the first two having the same number. Or Violet Kailee Jo, which don't fit well together to me. (Not real names, btw, I made those up.) I like yours and your kids' names. Though I am curious about the origins of BoDien.
Wow, sorry for the analysis of your names there, but it's just barely 5am. X.x My brain on getting up waaaaay too early.

The only people who will ever buy into this bs are people who have innocently never come across the urban legend (shame on you) and racists who somehow believe these names add fuel to the fire.
Don't. Even. Try it.

Date: 2009-10-22 08:38 pm (UTC)So anyway...
Charity Rose is really pretty. And I usually condemn Marie as a filler name (since I myself am blessed with it), but I do like it with Haley.
Noelle is very pretty, but Uriah is sort of...unusual to see on a girl. Maybe because so many other feminine names end in -a or -ah, they felt that Uriah worked as a feminine name, too.
I like the way Kayleigh Danielle flows. My opinion on the -eigh is another matter, but the name sounds nice!
You know...LaDarrinesha Patrice isn't all that bad. Had I used LaDarrinesha, I probably would have spelled it Ladarinesha instead--any extra letters or capitalization in the middle just make it more cumbersome. And I've always liked the name Patrice, though I didn't realize it was also a male name til I married a hockey fan! :)
Rome is an interesting one. I'm used to seeing Roman, but Rome is kinda cool, too. I'd probably use it as a middle name.
As for the ones with multiple apostrophes--I don't care what you look like or what country you come from, those names are terrible!
