While it isn't a favorite of mine, I sort of like it in a dusty old fashioned kind of way. I put it in the same category as George, Harry, Matilda, Alice, Cordelia, etc. and I generally tend to like those names. :) The Winifred we know is Winifred Sylvia Carrie, (Carrie being her aunt, Sylvia being her great grandmother) and she goes by Wini. Totally suits her.
I think Freddie would also be kind of a cute nickname.
I hope it makes a comeback! we're sticking with 2-syllable names (we have a 3-syllable last name) but I'd consider it otherwise! I hope to see it on other people's babies!
I fell in love with it watching "mary poppins" a gazillion times with my kids. lol.
my all-time favorite name! i'm planning on using it for my first daughter, partially because i adore it and partially because it'll honor my mother (her name is fred...) the nickname winnie is adorable, too. i love old fashioned, quirky names. i think winifred works well on a girly girl or a tomboy or anything in between. :)
Winifred's a tricky one. For some time now it's been considered awful on almost a cliche level, like Bertha and Herman, so using it is risky. You're going to have a lot of people recoil in horror when you tell them the baby's name. But I think it has potential. It has that so-clunky-it's-cute vibe, like Matilda. Also like Matilda, it has cute and accessible nicknames--Mattie and Tillie for Matilda, Winnie and Fred/Freddie for Winifred. It's the kind of name people warm up to when they actually meet a person named that. So I think it's worth considering, if you're special about it.
It makes me think of Hocus Pocus and Angel so that makes it pretty boss to begin with, but I also love how classic it is. Plus, lots of possibilities for nicknames.

Date: 2009-10-15 09:26 am (UTC)The part I hate thinks it's disgusting for a girls' name to end with "fred" and isn't too fussed on the Wini bit either.
But there's a small part of me that finds it cute and strangely appealing.
No way on earth I'd use it though but at least it's a good solid name.
