[identity profile] benebess.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

hello there,

My sister is getting a great dane female, and she wants to name her Audrey [means 'noble strength']. Her husband, on the other hand, thinks that's too much of a human name, and wants to name her Willow.

I thought i'd help them out and post here. What do you think of those names, and suggestions would be GREAT!

thankyou!

Out of the two, that dog looks more like a Willow, to me.

Eh, I'm with your brother-in-law on this one. I'm not big on people names for animals (why do we want to insult the poor animal that way?) so between those two names, I'd have to do with Willow. Though, that's still too people-y for my personal tastes.

(I have a cat named Rat, though, so... you might not want to listen to me. ^_^)

Why is a 'people name' an insult to the animal? I tend to think it's names like Fluffy, Poopsie and Tickles that are the insult.

I like both but I think Willow fits her the better.

I think she really looks like a Minerva though.

I dunno. Owning a Great Dane myself, I'm tempted to say nothing too noble. They're pretty much the stupidest, sweetest, more airheaded dogs in the universe. My vote is with Willow.

I think every single animal Ive ever had has a people name.

Ruby Soho, chihuahua
Sally Nitemare, rat
Phoebe Louise, lab
Pepper Anne, pit
Sam, pit

I think dogs are people too. You will fall in love with Audrey, I promise :D

One of my friends had a great dane named Willow, so Willow gets my vote :)

Personally, I'm a big fan of 'human' names on animals. Why shouldn't they have the dignity of a real name? Does it somehow threaten your humanity to call the dog Audrey instead of Pookie? (That's the metaphorical 'your', by the way, I know it's the friend's husband making the argument.) Anyway, Willow is used on tons of humans, so he wouldn't be accomplishing anything there. That said, I actually like Willow better than Audrey.

I have a cat with a very cat name (Snuggs, who I named when I was a kid) and a cat with a very human name (Benny, who came named from the shelter), so I really think either can work. I think the dog looks a lot more like a Willow, though, which is equally as human of a name as Audrey.

I agree with the 'too human' thing. I'm not a fan of human names on dogs. Not anymore, at least (when I was little I had a dog named Missy). Anyway...I know a Great Dane named Willow...I like it! I also know a Great Dane named Little Maya.

I vote Willow :) I don't like too human-y names for animals. :)

I LOVE Audrey, but if he's set on using a non-human name at least Willow is a great option :)
