Facebook Friend

A facebook friend of a friend is:

Isabeau

What do you think?

At first I was like "WTH?" but the more I say it the more I like it.  I think it's a neat variation of Isabelle - except for the whole Belle = girl, Beau = boy thing.  (The name was on a girl)

ew.

It's been mentioned on here a couple of days ago..I'm starting to fear it's a trend taking on!
I despise for the very same reason you mentioned, about "beau" being masculine.

oh it wasn't about the name itself, it was among the birth announcements :) no worries!

I've always thought it was weird but it's an actual French name. It was used in a story I loved when I was young...for a girl who had a twin sister called Isabelle. It's considered a very old-fashioned name here, though.

[Edited because something else occured to me] For us French-speaking people, spelling Isabel instead of Isabelle would be the same as Isabeau since "bel" is the form we use with a masculine name starting with a vowel ("un bel enfant").

I can't comprehend that it's a "girl's name" that ends in "beau." That should make it a masculine version of Isabelle. But I do like the sound of it, and it seems very medivally... especially when you spell it Ysabeau. I think it would be cool on a character and I'd probably consider it a GP.

It IS a boys name, isn't it? I don't feel like I've made that up.

The girl's name Isabeau \i-sa-beau\ is a variant of Isabel (Spanish, Latin). See for meaning of Isabeau.

The baby name Isabeau sounds like Esabeau and Ysabeau. Other similar baby names are Isabell, Isabele and Isabela.

Isabeau is an uncommon first name for women and an equally uncommon last name for both men and women. (1990 U.S. Census)

oh, hmm...maybe I was thinking of Isadore.

[identity profile] winninghearts.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
It is a real name, and it's a girl's name. Just one of those things, I guess.

Some girls in The Netherlands are called Isabeau. I don't think it's weird at all, just rare =).

I don't think the whole 'Aaah Beau is the masculine version!' is a big deal at all.

agreed on both counts.

Isabeau is a real girl's name. I love it. Much prefer it over Isabella etc. I like it spelt Izabeau.

izabeau = double ew

[identity profile] frost.livejournal.com 2009-10-09 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol, mte. ^^;

[identity profile] miss-tee.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It reminds me of Ladyhawke (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089457/)

[identity profile] bluedano.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I was totally going to say this!

[identity profile] miss-tee.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Now I want to watch it!
I don't own it though :(
My mom has it on VHS. I watched it SO many times growing up!

[identity profile] bluedano.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too! It makes me like the name Isabeau, just because I imagine Rutger Hauer saying it and I had the biggest crush on him growing up, just from that movie.

Yay, I found a clip on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-FLR4UIqlQ)! About 5:30 in is where he says her name and it makes me swoon. ;)

thank you!

I hate it.

[identity profile] cremepuff.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Reminds me of Rachael Ray's dog, Isaboo. Granted, she made that name by combining the name of her old dog with Isabel, but still.

[identity profile] pegasus2o5.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
The only place I've heard Isabeau was the woman in Ladyhawke. Great movie, good character, but I never could warm up to the name. In fact it was sort of a distraction throughout the movie. Like you said, it means BOY, and even the sound of it never flowed well to me. Isabeau's sweetheart, on the other hand, had the very dashing and dramatic name Navarre. No idea what it means, but I like it!

[identity profile] thellamaqueen.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
It makes me want to say "is a boy". lol i don't know. I get where you're coming from on the "doesn't 'beau' connote 'boy'?" thing, but from what everyone else has said, it looks like it's a legitimately feminine name somehow.

[identity profile] laminy.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate it. I saw it a little while ago here, and I think I hated it then too. You can have Isabelle, or you can have Beau. You cannot have both. And even though I'm currently using Beau on a female character, it is not for girls in real life. And I think it looks awkward, sounds ugly.

[identity profile] arbus.livejournal.com 2009-10-09 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
not a fan.

sounds like a two year old, or someone with a speech impediment, trying to say isabel.

ETA: isabeau was a contestant on 'biggest loser' recently...

Hate it. Sounds like a really awkward (made-up) mix, despite it supposedly being a real name. :(

[identity profile] amstorrs.livejournal.com 2009-10-10 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
That's my neighbor's dog's name lol! I don't really like it for a baby though.
