[identity profile] lizziey.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I just met a soldier who's first name was Trinidad. Yes, Trinidad.

I asked WTFFFFF, and he was like "My parents, I don't even know. They're from Mexico." Is it normal for this to happen there?

-_-

I am of the firm belief of "If you can find it in the atlas or the dictionary, it is not a name." Barring, of course, places named after people in the first place (Elizabeth, NJ for example).

Well, it just means 'trinity' in Spanish, so it's not that far-fetched as a name. I have seen it as a name before... and I just looked it up on behindthename.com, and apparently it made the top 1000 almost every year from the late 1910s to the 1950s.

Yeah, it just doesn't seem that different to me from similar religious concept names like Consuelo, Dolores, or even Concepción.

For that matter, Trinity in English has experienced a recent surge (http://www.babynamewizard.com/voyager/#prefix=TRINITY&ms=false&sw=f&exact=false).

The only thing that might bother me about that is that Trinidad is a feminine noun and name in spanish.. but I love place names otherwise :)

Here Trinidad is a beach town, there are worse places to share a name with.

I'm guessing the OP, like me, didn't know it meant trinity. To me it sounds like his siblings should be Barbados or Bermuda or something.

I know better now - you learn something every day on this comm ;)

I'm not a fan, It sounds like a female name. I think the name is based on saints but I'm unsure.

Does he nick name?

Ah yes, Military men. Lucky for him, huh? Does he like his name?

My husband is in the Navy and instead of being Chad's wife I'm Macready's wife.

So, just to be clear, say: Hope, Grace, Faith, April, May, June, Rose, Lily, and Daisy aren't names?

G-d, that rules out quite a few, doesn't it?

This post made me go look at my own list to remind myself. I think the majority of my names are actually from atlases or dictionaries. Well, not picked from there, but they'd sure as heck be found there.

I like it though. They're all names to me and I'd be happy to use them. In some cases, I actually have two of them together.

Yeah, but I didn't ask if you liked them, I asked if you disagreed that they were names. And BTW Rose is definitely in the dictionary.

But by the definition "If you can find it in the atlas or the dictionary, it is not a name," Rose wouldn't be a name. And neither would Amber, Bill, Bob, Brad, Carol, Christian, Cliff, Crystal, Dawn, Dean, Drew, Earl, Erin, Eve, Florence, Frank, Gene, Grant, Holly, Hunter, Ivy, Jack, Jade, Joy, Kay, Ken, Kent, Lance, Mark, Max, Mike, Miles, Misty, Nick, Noel, Norm, Olive, Patty, Pearl, Penny, Rich, Rob, Rosemary, Sandy, Sue, Summer, Tony, Victor or Will, to name a few. You really think that none of those are names? Because that seems a little silly.

Yes, but people can be factually incorrect. If you said, "I don't like any names in the dictionary," that would be fine, but to say that "No words in the dictionary are names" is clearly untrue. If you mis-worded your statement, you're welcome to correct it rather than continuing to defend it.

And no, I don't listen to Jeff Dunham.

But feel free to move on yourself.

LOL

"Main Entry: figure of speech
Date: 1751

: a form of expression (as a simile or metaphor) used to convey meaning or heighten effect often by comparing or identifying one thing with another that has a meaning or connotation familiar to the reader or listener"

I'm stuck in my apartment studying for my grammar and editing midterm, so if you'd like to explain to me exactly which phrase you used was the figure of speech and what familiar meaning or connotation it was attempting to convey, go for it.

And since your comments are emailed to me as well, if we're mandated to reply to everything we read, I guess we're stuck in a feedback loop for all eternity.

Wait, so you're claiming that the meaning of "figure of speech" has changed since then? Apparently, you're not familiar with a dictionary, as that's the date the term originated - if the meaning had changed, that would be listed as well.

I'm not sure how my making the radical claim that Will and Rose are names offended you enough to stoop repeatedly to ad hominem attacks, as I haven't said anything personally rude to you, but if it makes you happy, more power to you. :)

She actually is right. This post was kind of rude, imo.
