What other names besides Jacob could Jake be a nickname for? Or is Jake okay just to use by itself? We like Jacob but it is the number one name in the US right now which sort of turns me off of it.

i know two babies named jake. not jacob, just jake.

just for the record, pretty much ALL of those jacobs are going to become jakes once they get to school, so naming your son jake because jacobs popularity turns you off doesnt sound like a great idea to me.

also, i really dislike jake and much prefer jacob, but neither is my taste anyway, so thats just me!

I know someone named just Jake, but the thing is that when a lot of these Jacobs are in school, they are going to go by Jake too. And there are a lot of Jacobs, so it doesn't really solve the popularity issue much. Also, people will just assume that Jake is short for Jacob, even if it's not.

I do like Jacob, though.

I've only ever known Jake to be a stand-alone name...
The one Jacob I knew, way back in elementary school, went by it (Jacob). I wasn't aware that the name was shortened to Jake so often- though I suppose it's obvious now that I actually think about it, lol. ^^

I like Jake on it's own. It's one of only a few nicknames that I don't mind as a full name.

Other suggestions (not all my style, but I'll suggest anyway! )
Jacoby (I prefer Jacobi or Jacobai)
Jakob
Jacobiah
Jacobson

I think Jack is nice for Jacob...even though it's not "traditional".

I think the hero of William Shatner's Tek books was Jake-short-for-Jonathan, which I always thought was bizarre, but hey, it's the Tek books...

I've known a few Jakes and it wasn't short for anything

I went to elementary school with a boy whose younger brother was Jake, short for James. Yeah, I don't know. The older brother's name was Jeremy.
