Well, I don't have kids but I did that with my cats! My great-aunt gave me a couple of kittens she ended up with, but it was weeks before I had a chance to come pick them. During that time I planned to name them Charlotte and Jasper.
The moment I saw the girl kitten, however, I knew she was not a Charlotte. My second-choice name, Lucy, fit her much better. It's hard to explain, she just looked more like a Lucy. Also, I've always thought of Charlotte as a very sweet and demure name; my cat can be sweet but has a sharp sort of personality, so Lucy fits better there, too.
The boy cat ended up as Jack instead of Jasper. Jasper is a gentle, intellectual sort of name, and Jack, bless his heart, was neither of those things. He was very bold and confident from the beginning so my sister insisted that Jack fit him better, and Jack he became.
On the up side, that means Charlotte and Jasper are still free for me to maybe use on my kids, someday.
I did this with my cats too. Our first cat we intended on naming Newton, but when we saw him he was definitely not a Newton. His name when we adopted him was Titan, but that didn't fit either. We named him Charlie instead. He is totally a Charles. Our other cat was named Mama when we got her, but it didn't fit. We decided to name her Jackie, and it fits much better.
Interesting note: neither cat responded to Titan or Mama when we used them for a few weeks before deciding on a permanent name - but both learned Charles and Jackie within days. I think they new it fit them better too... lol
My dog is the same way. When we adopted her, her name was Miley, but she would NEVER respond to Miley for us! We re-named her Anya, and from day one she has responded to that name.
LOL! Strange I had a cat whose name was Phantom, but he always came to Bob. Or Bobby. It was so weird. We would never name a cat Bob, but he loved it. : )
That is funny! My sister's dog came with the name Waylon, which we decided to keep, but we gave him the middle name Pippin, as in the hobbit. From the first time we said it, he has answered to Pippin as eagerly as Waylon! It's so weird.
I had a brief panic attack in the hospital when I met my daughter and thought "OMG this name doesn't suit her, what was I thinking?" I think it was because her sex was a surprise, so I had no clue who I was giving birth to. When she came out a girl I was SO happy, but she was such a stranger to me. I couldn't help but think maybe I chose the wrong name, or maybe it didn't suit her personality.
I'm so glad I didn't change my mind though, because she can't be anything other than Elise Ava now.
This happened with my first puppy, I had his name picked out for months. Then I was sure he didn't fit it. I'm so glad I didn't change my mind either. I assume it'll be like this for my children too. That they won't look as I have pictured them but I will stick to my decision because I LOVE those names and they are the names of my children. No matter how they 'first' look. And I think it might have something to do with projection. I know my baby won't look like the child I am picturing, not right away. But that doesn't change it being them.
my friend had a baby and named him landon, but was really bummed about it and changed it to luke a few days later. and I think luke fits him much better.
Hasn't happened to me yet, and I hope it doesn't - I'm pretty dead set on naming my daughter Lydia whenever I have her, but if I see her and she just doesn't look like a Lydia to me, I'll have to rethink.
i have told my husband that we will have a couple of first names picked out for each sex (middle names are already set) when we go to give birth, and we will decide there which one fits him/her the best! it kind of drives me crazy when i hear people referring to their unborn child as One Very Specific Name their entire pregnancy. you cant name someone until you meet them, you know? it just doesnt make sense to me, but maybe thats just me!
My mum had always wanted a Matthew. Being firstborn (and a girl) she waited... then when my brother arrived she freaked out because he didn't look like a Matthew. Apparantly she imagined her Matthew as a big, blonde baby and my brother wasn't like that. They ended up using their chosen girl name (Jaimee Lee) as inspiration and went with Jamie. Third time lucky, mum had her chubby, blonde haired, blue eyed Matthew.
