My boyfriend is looking into changing his last name. His name is Craig James Silvia.

He has no relationship with his father, he was abusive and left his mother when he was 2 years old. He wants to drop Silvia.

He has 3 other brothers, all same father and his mother has chosen to keep Jacqueline Silvia as her name. Her maiden name is Reed.

His options are:

Craig James- just dropping his last name
Craig James Reed- Adding his moms maiden name, but I feel that it is too choppy.
Craig MIDDLE NAME James- Adding a whole new middle name.

He has no idea about a middle name. His only idea as of right now is Jackson, because Jackson represents his mother. She is french so maybe have it spelt as the french version?

I would love any options & suggestions for both his options and for any middle name that you think would fit nicely with Craig James.

I like Craig MIDDLE NAME James.

I don't like Craig James Jackson or Craig Jackson James to be honest. I suppose he really wants to include his mother... I was thinking Jacques (like Jacqueline), but then you have the alliteration issue again. Does she have a middle name?

Craig Reed isn't bad at all but I just feel like it doesn't flow as well as Craig James.

I prefer Craig Reed myself. What about Craig Reed James? or Craig Reed Jackson?

I like Craig MIDDLE NAME James. And I actually don't think Craig James Reed is too bad.

I had my father's last name and, well, I've never met him, but he was a bad bad person, and I HATED it. I went by my mom's middle name for the longest time, although I decided to wait until I got married to change my name since it's easier as a woman. I say take his mom's name. Or maybe if you guys will get married he can take yours, heh:)

Because Craig James is the name his mother chose to give him, I don't personally like the idea of just coming up with a new middle name. So I'd say either just go with Craig James or else Craig James Reed.

Then again, I personally think he could just keep the last name he has now. No, he may have no relationship with his father but...it's still his mom's last name, too. But, that's JMHO.

I rather like Craig James Reed, for the symbolism (keeping a family link) as much as for the sound.

I like the idea of Craig James Jackson. A little bit choppy and J-heavy, but not terrible, and it replaces his dad's name with his mom's--not just her maiden name, but literally proclaiming himself her son instead of his.

I also liked the idea someone suggested of marrying you and taking your surname. :)

I like Craig James Reed, or as not yet suggested, Jackson James Craig. I know it would make Craig his last name, but there are people who are addressed by their last name, as though it's a first name.

If I didn't love my dad so much, I might take my mother's maiden name - Dr. Griffin sounds way cooler than Dr. Boone, and Griffin-Brown is a much better hyphenation than Boone-Brown. It would be awesome to be Melissa Griffin-Brown, but at this rate I'm just dropping my actual last name and taking my partner's when we get married.

Also, one of my nicknames in college was "Boone" - but "Griff" would've been hilarious to me. It was my grandfather's nickname too, lol

Anyway, I'm for the taking of the mom's maiden name. It's a nice way to honor his mom's role in raising him into decent human being and a man, and I don't think it sounds too choppy - yeah, they all have one syllable, but there's nothing *really* wrong with that. Most times, he'll just be Craig Reed.
