We have just put a deposit on a Ruby Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy and are trying to find a name for her. She won't be ready to come home for another 9 weeks but the breeder would like to start using the name we pick for her.

We're having difficulty as I like 'human' names for dogs and my husband wants to name her 'fluffy' or 'chocolate'. I argued that the dog is neither chocolate coloured nor fluffy but he won't stop suggesting them. I like Regina (after Spektor) but he says this is an awful name. So please, suggestions!

We already own a Ruby Cavalier and her name is Indy:

Indy - My Baby

We only have one picture of the pup we're buying and as she's only a day or two old, she looks like a rat... Not really a good reference for naming. This dog pictured is our Cavalier, Indy. The pup is from the same breeder (and related to Indy) so I can only presume they will look somewhat similar.

Seeing her, I think

Missy
Paris
Jessie
Lila
Bea
Romie

you need an easy name, typically 2 syllables.
I've had 3 dogs and their names were Niggy (Enigma), Cindy (Silver Cinder) and Dusty (Silver Dust)

You could name her Coco. It's got a "Chocolate" vibe to it, and you can call her Coconut when she's being ridiculous.

I'd call her Anna, to go with Indy, but then I am a) a geek and b) have no shame and wouldn't be the slightest bit embarrassed to be calling for Indy, Anna, when I wanted them to come.

Of course judging by my experiences with the breed, which I love, you could just go with something like 'idiot', because you're going to be calling her that so often she'll think it's her name anyway :D

My dog (mostly Norfolk Terrier) thinks his name is menace because it's what I yell at him when he trips me up (which is all the time lol).

I heard a vet on the radio say that when God made King Charles Spaniels he forgot to include a brain :D The last one I spent any time with could not grasp the concept of an extending lead and would hurtle off at full speed only to be jerked off her feet when she hit the maximum extent. And she would do it repeatedly, it's like, seriously, didn't you learn last time?

I don't know whether it's purely coincidence but the smartest dog we've owned (a border collie actually) was also the most nervous. He was definitely the best trained and least stubborn (terriers are known for 'having a mind of their own' meaning if you want it to follow commands you'd better stick to telling it to do things it wanted to anyway lol) but I don't miss having him in my lap shaking every time there's a storm.

Whether the terrier would come out from under a towel would probably depend on whether it was comfortable under there and if there was food...

Well, Ruby is the obvious choice, I guess. I think it's a great name but I guess it is a little... obvious.

It may be possible to compromise between your style and his. How about:

Puppy-level-cute human names:
Scarlett
Daisy (someone else suggested this, but I like it)
Lottie
Minnie
Penny
Lulu
Belle
Clarissa
Merry

Nature names:
Jasmine
Clover
Pansy
Tansy
Poppy
Sunny
Echo
Eden
Star

Mythology names:
Athena
Minerva
Eris
Persephone

Or you could name her after a fictional character you both like. Say you're both Lord of the Rings fans--name her Arwen. Star Wars? Leia. Twilight? Alice or Bella. Harry Potter? Ginny or Hermione. (Can you tell which fandoms I like? Hee hee.)

Let us know what you decide!

Lucky?? Well... not what I would have chosen, we'll leave it that. But it could definitely be worse. *cough*Fluffy*cough*

But the next one will be Lulu! Excellent choice, madame!

"Lucky"? Such a generic doggy name :( I liked Scarlett, honestly.
