[identity profile] rachie-01.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

Hey everyone. Just as a mini-intro, my name is Rachael and I'm 20. I shouldn't think I'll be having babies for a while yet but I found this community and it seems like fun. I am actually that "Octoberbaby09" poster who posted about her boss and his wife wanting to name their baby boy Chester. I think the wife really likes it and I think it's growing on my boss. I can't find the entry now, but to the commentor who said "it reminds me of the scrawny Linkin Park lead singer", my boss told me he thinks his wife got it from him, heh.

Anyway, I thought I'd ask your opinion on some baby names. Sometimes me and my boyfriend-of-2-years talk about baby names (just to see if the other likes it) and we've "picked" two boy names. I'm not sure if they'll change within 4-5 years time (whoa yes, this is way far in advance, so maybe), but at the moment they are Oliver and Rory. I have already read some people don't like the name Oliver, but what do you think about how it goes with Rory? I've not heard or seen much on the name Rory here (although I faintly remember something about boys vs girls named Rory... definitely a boy name! ... unless I am imagining it). I think they are quite nice together? Admittedly I have a cat called Rory but as soon as my friend suggested the name for my cat it has become one of my favourite boy names. Just as a note if I married my boyfriend their surname would be Rebelo.

Does anyone else find they have a particularly hard time thinking of one particular gender name? We suck at girl names. Grace and Amelia are quite nice, although I don't think I'd want to name my future children either of those. I'm not particularly looking for girl suggestions, it's more about the above. Sorry to have went on a bit here!

I love Oliver. I like Rory, but i think of it as a girls name (Rory Gilmore for Gilmore Girls).

I have huge problems thinking of boys names! I'm so the opposite. There are maybe ten names that I really like. I love Amelia. Grace is alright.

I loooove Rory on a guy and I hated that Gilmore Girls show so Rory is still a boy's name to me (and the actual name is listed as a boy's name on behind the name I think)... I tend to like it as a nickname for Rordan that means 'little poet king' and is an Irish name.

As for Oliver I quite like it! I don't know why people wouldn't like it >.>

that makes no sense >.> Oliver is like... a real name, a real complete name.

Rory is way too much of a mouthful for me. Kind of like Aurora. I think it's so beautiful then I say it and my mouth trips on it. I absolutely love the name Oliver. We named our puppy that, but it's still one of my favorite boys names lol.

I've only heard Rory on girls, but could easily see it either way.

I do the same thing with my boyfriend talking about names... he's told me flat out that he will never have kids with (insert all of my favorite names here), which depresses me. He loves Oliver though. So much. I think it's okay, but there are so many names I like more.

Also, back to Rory. I think of a lion. And I hate girls names.

I really like Oliver right now (it's one of my current boys' names), but am kind of indifferent when it comes to Rory. Sometimes it makes me think of a dog, haha. ^^;

Rachael named one of her cats Rory :P

I'm 'the boyfriend' by the way.

I think it's the "roar" in the name that makes me think of animals... Dog or a lion or something, haha. >_>

I like Oliver and Rory in theory
for me, Rory seems hard to say -it doesn't roll off my tongue
that's a reason I wouldn't go for it
and for us- we always had an overabundance of girls names we liked and like 1 boys (used by my son now) if we ever had another boy- I'd have no idea what we'd call him

Even though I do think of Rory from Gilmore Girls as well, I can definitely see it on a boy. I used to know a boy called Rory, actually.
I think it's a little awkward to pronounce though...I hate the double -r sound...and Rory Rebelo would be even worse!
I really like Oliver, and Oliver & Rory sound fine to me!

Oh don't get me wrong, I don't mind alliterating names at all! I defenitely don't mind Rachael Rebelo ;) I suppose it's just Rory. And Aurora, for that matter. I can't seem to pronounce it normally...it all sounds like 'roar' to me ;)

I'm not a huge fan of Oliver or Rory, but I do like them together! Because of the R in your last name, I'd say Oliver Rory is the better combo. :)

I actually really like Oliver, but I don't really like Rory for a boy at all. Oliver gets my vote hands down

I love Gilmore Girls, but I still consider Rory a boy's name more than a girl's. I like it, but it's difficult for me to pronounce out loud. Rory Rebelo sounds like a mouthful, espeically. Oliver is nice too though.

Regarding the beginning of your post, when I was younger a friend of mine would always call really creepy guys Chester, Chester the Child Molester. So yeah. Not a fan of that name. Hahaha.

I love Rory and Oliver! I think they go great together. I've always grouped them in the same category. I haven't let myself love Rory more though because our surname starts with R and that's just too much R. So since your surname does too, I'd not recommend using Rory.

My husband and I have a harder time with boy's name than girl's names by far. We have at least 4 girl's names we agree on for use and have been 100% set on one to use for our first daughter for awhile now. We didn't have too much difficulty picking a name for our son, but if we ever have another boy it might be a little harder!

Rory Rebelo is a whoooooole lotta under-the-tongue R. And Oliverebelo kinda blends together, y'know?

I like Rory as a nickname for Roderick, but I wouldn't go with Rory OR Oliver with that surname, to be honest.

I really like the name Rory! Yes, there's the whole Gilmore Girls thing around it but I really see it as a boy's name. Also, I have no trouble with girls' names just the boys. Which makes me think I'll have all boys! :)
