[identity profile] sallymn.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

A tiny but nice moment on the radio yesterday, made me smile.

It was a callback show, and one of the commentators speaks every so often of his kids, Archie and Eliza (both under two, I believe). One of his fans, a dear little old lady of about 70-80, rang to say how much she liked the names, because that they belonged to her parents...

Obviously the wheel has turned on these two names, but how far? What do you think of them?

Eliza is okay but Archie is atrocious.

I haven't heard of Archie being as popular in the US as it seems to be in the UK. I would never use Archie, but I absolutely love Eliza - it's on my (very hypothetical) shortlist.

That's such a cute story!

I don't like Archie at all (too nicknamey, but I also don't like Archibald) but I like Eliza a lot.

Archie isn't all that bad. I put it on a random name list that I made today.
Eliza, I like.

i love Eliza. Archie not so much--it does definitely make me think of an old man.

I love Eliza. Archie is cute but not my style.

I really loathe the British trend of giving children overly cutesy nicknames as full names. Maisie, Millie, Archie, Alfie, and company are almost as bad as all the Jalee/Kaylin/Jeylyn business in the US, to me.

Were these children in the UK or elsewhere?

You can see what I mean here (http://www.statistics.gov.uk/specials/babiesnames_boys.asp). Freddie, Archie, Alfie, Charlie, and more are all ahead of the names for which they used to be a diminutive.

I love them both. Cute story!
