How do you pronounce Olivia?

I dont like how it sounds when its said as "Oh-Livia"
I do like how it sounds if its said like "Uh-Livia"
How do you say it? just outta curiosity. It seems kinda stupid and like such a small thing,
but for some reason it really makes a weird difference to me :/ i dunno why.

I kinda have this same issue with my own name which is simply Tara :P
I have people say it either  like "Tear-uh" , "Taa-ruh" <--i prefer this one, and also like "Tar-uh" which I hate.

I've seen it spelled Alivia, but just like I've seen Elizabeth spelled Alizabeth.
I blame accents for this.

Carmella is a common mispelling of Carmela.

And I always have a weird moment when people ask me my name. I say it's Chel-sea, but almost everyone I know says it more Chul-sea and I prefer it that way.

My Italian grandmother, aunt and mother all spelled/spell their names Carmella. Ive seen the name both ways though anyway, and I dont think either one is the incorrect way to spell it.
Just like Michelle can be spelled Michele also. Ive seen both.

Ive thought about, if I used Olivia, spelling it Alivia, but that doesn't exactly look right to me oddly enough lol. Its not my top name anyways, I was just wondering what others said it like :)

Michèle is another version of Michelle, but I can't say whether it's legit or not, since I'm not that familiar with french culture.

But having lived all 25 yrs of my life in Italy, I can tell you no one spells it Carmella here, so it must be a mistyping down the line.

thats a lot of A's! lol :) Im not saying Alivia is wrong or bad, it just looks odd to me since ive never seen it spelled that way on a person ya know? I do kinda like it but I'm still on the fence. Like I said it's not a top name of mine, but I do like it :)

I think it depends on where you live. up North, it would most likely be Oh-livia, and down South it would be pronounced Uh-livia.
I pronounce it both ways, though, because my accent is part Northern, part Southern. just depends on who I'm talking to, really.

*shrugs* lol I want to use it b/c it's a family name and I want to honor both my g-ma and mom, I don't mind if it seems mispelled to someone who actually lives in Italy and while I would love to visit one day, I have no intention of living there so for here in NJ, It doesn't seem odd to be spelled that way. :) Any baby names websites Ive looked on have both spellings for both Michelle/Michele and Carmella/Carmela just saying they are alternate spellings for one or the other. So I never viewed it/them as incorrect spellings of one another. Guess it just depends where you live.

Many websites have little mistakes like that, that could only be evidenced by someone living in that culture. As long as one's informed, then he can choose what's best for them :)

A co-worker of mine pronounces "water" as "wuter", and she sais that's typical for NY state, where she's from. But to add to that, she claims it's the "correct" pronounciation!

In Dutch, it's Oh-LEE-vee-ah, which is kind of pretty, I think. In English I pronounce it as Uh-LIV-ee-ah.

I say Oh-livia, and I generally hate it pronounced UH-Livia, (because it is spelled Olivia, not Ahlivia) and to my ears, it makes it sound slurred.

I also say Tar-uh, unless I know beforehand that someone pronounces it Tear-Uh, but I've only met two Taras, so I rarely say the name.


I love the name Tess, not so much Tessa.

oh-livia. uh-livia sounds lazy or something to me and i don't like it at all. as for tara, i pronounce it like tara reid. i've never met a tar-a, only tear-as that say people mispronounce it as tar-a all the time.

I say Tear-uh. Tear-uh vs. Taa-ruh is mostly an accent thing -- where I'm from, we'd pronounce the first syllable of Meredith the same way (mare), rather than with the same vowel as in "get".

Whoa, really? I live in MA and never in my life have I heard it pronounced Oh-livia. Always always always "uh-livia."

Does that mean that people pronounce Oliver like "oh-liver" too and I'm just oblivious? Both of those names begin with "olive" ... like the food, and are pronounced as such.

I'd probably say it more like Oh-livia if I were speaking slowly and carefully, but said more quickly, I'd definitely say "uh". Linguistically, I'd say probably most people would do this when speaking quickly because it's not a stressed syllable, which usually ends up being pronounced "uh".
