Grey

WDYT?

Boy's name?
Girl's name?
Only cool as a middle name?
NOT a name?

I like it, but am not sure about it and don't know if I like it better for a boy or a girl. I think it'd be cute on a little girl, but then imagine how unfortunate it would be if she were a dreary person.. or resented me for naming her a color (regardless of the spelling). I think it sounds a lot less unusual for a boy.. kind of handsome and stoic, but still kinda fun.

I love Grey, for both sexes. It's one of the unisex names that could honestly work on either sex. I prefer Grey for a boy and Gray for a girl. I'd use it as both a first and middle name, depending.

As a first name, I only like it on a boy, and it's alright. But as a middle name, I kind of love it, on both genders.

I like it, really... of course I am big on color/hippie names but it sounds really nice. I could never use it because my sister's cat was named that but if it hadn't been I might consider it.

Eh, it's not stellar on a boy, but it suits boys better than girls. I prefer it as a middle-name, either way.

I think of Catch and Release when I hear it. That said, I've only seen it used as a middle name in real life.

I have Gray on my list, for a boy. I think that Grey works on a girl. Yes, I do actually see a difference in the spellings. I would only ever use it as a middle name, it just doesn't seem like much of a first name to me.

I feel neutral about Grey or Gray, but I LOATHE "Grayson". To me, it sounds cheap, trendy, and — worst of all — like a name in denial of its own trendiness, as if the parents are trying to be dignified. I think a lot of the newer inventions ending in -son or -ton suffer from that.

Many names existed (although rarely) for decades or even centuries before becoming trendy. Actually, the fact that people can point to relatives often enhances the appeal. Let's say a modern American couple have, between them, one grandfather called Grayson Fred, one called Bruce Eugene, one called Frank Bernard, and one called Albert Carl. That couple can choose from eight grandfather-honoring names. The fact that the couple is most likely to choose Grayson and not one of the other seven means that 1. It is trendy and 2. They are legitimately honoring their family.

Unfotunately, the Name Voyager (http://www.babynamewizard.com/voyager/) won't let users link to specific names any more. But type in both "Grayson" and "Greyson" and the trendiness will become apparent.

I love the name Grey for a middle name. If I ever have a girl a name that I like is Robin Grey.

Well, my partner and I plan on using Grey as a middle name for Felix. I dislike it spelled "Gray".

i could see it as a middle name, but it's really more of a surname (if a name at all) in my opinion.

To me, it's not really a name, and if it is used as a name, it's for a boy.

Awfully pompous for a child, but fine for an adult. Depends on how fast they can grow into it...

I have always loved Grayson, since I was a kid and Dick Grayson became Robin, and knew I would name my son that... When I was actually pregnant with him we changed the spelling to be Greysun to honor his American Indian heritage. Our daughter only calls him Grey (actually Grey Grey), it is very cute and suits him just as well as Greysun. He will be 4 this month and since he was born I have only heard of his name 2 other times both on girls (Gracen) and they went by Gracie.

I like it as a unisex middle name, actually. In fact, I just read last night that it's the middle name of actress Emmy Rossum (full name: Emmanuelle Grey).

It's a nice surname, the 79th most popular in the country. I wouldn't use it as a first though.
