so i was screwing around on nymbler, and the name Dorcas popped up. why on earth would you name your child Dorcas?? that would be a favorite to pick on on the playground, i'm sure.

I LOVE the name Dorcas. My husband has a cousin named Dorcas. It means "gazelle", which is lovely. The "dork" part in it makes it unusable now though, which I think is so sad.

it does sound ok, not my style, even getting past "dork" part, if it weren't for that i'd prob like it more! =]

My school had a school nurse named Dorcas Van Horn. All the kids called her Dorky Van Horny. We'd have felt bad if she wasn't so mean! heh.

I know a woman named Dorcas. I believe her parents found it in the Bible, after Dorcas, who was a dressmaker and known for her good works and charitableness.

I'd never heard it before, but I can't say I'm fond of how it sounds, althought it's interesting. And I can't get too much past "dork" either.

It's a better biblical name than Gomer.

I like it. I've known two women with the name. Yeah, they probably got teased, but "Dork" is pretty tame in terms of teasing.

I agree that it'd probably spark some teasing if you're raising your kid in an English-speaking country (assuming that every predominantly English-speaking country uses "dork"/"dorkus"), but otherwise, why not?

I remember being about 12 years old and first learning that Dorcus was a name, and I thought it was the funniest thing I had ever heard. :X So yeah, I would definitely never use it because of the teasing factor... and even more than that because I just don't like the way it sounds.

Did anyone else have to read the book Johnny Tremain in middle school? That's the only time I've heard of someone named Dorcas.

I don't think it even sounds nice, Dork aside.. it sounds more masculine to me, even though it's a female name.

It makes me think more of orcas than dorks.

The only time I've ever heard it said it was pronounced "DOOR-SAS." With a soft C. I like it much better that way.
