I'm from Massachusetts, so it has witchy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salem_Witch_Trials), touristy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salem,_Massachusetts) connotations for me.

Salem witch trials comes to mind, as does the black cat on Sabrina.

If used on a person, I always pictured a boy. (In fact, when I was in middle school and still writing, I had a male character named Salem...)

That's exactly what I was going to write: witch trials or state capital. I lived in Salem, Oregon for awhile, and I wouldn't say the name brings up the greatest connotations either way.

I think it's a boy name because the only person I know who's named Salem is a man (of Arabic descent, so I suppose the name is Arabic too). It might be okay for a girl, though.

Okay, I guiltily admit that I think it sounds cool (I am a sucker for fall/Halloweeny names), but I wouldn't use it on a human. Cute name for a cat, though.

It's a family name in my ex-boyfriend's family - he has an aunt Salem and a female cousin named Salem. They're originally from Winston-Salem (my hometown) and I always thought it was kind of cool... unusual but pretty.
