Aug. 23rd, 2009 12:36 pmmy dear fiance brought up the name phoebe a couple of days ago.
i told him flat out that i didnt like it, but now i am reconsidering. it is far nicer than his other recent suggestion of marina i swear. the boy is so random. marina is not a name to me, its a place to park boats. he insisted it harkens back to his irish heritage.
only other names we agree on so far are ruby and josie and possibly fiona.
what do you guys think of phoebe?

Date: 2009-08-23 04:45 pm (UTC)It's been mentioned at least 3 times in the last few weeks in this community, whereas before it was one of those never-heard of names.
To me, there's a strong association with Friends that I can't shake off (and I find the Phoebe character to be a tad creepy, along with funny), but I do think it's a great decent name that should be used more :)
I love Ruby and Josephine (nn Josie), while I don't care for Marina, but it IS a legit name ;) If it's for the irish heritage, Maria is an exponentially better name, imo.
I dislike Fiona!

Date: 2009-08-23 05:43 pm (UTC)Phoebe is ok, it's cute, but yeah I think of Phoebe from friends when I hear it so it's not that great to me.
Ruby and Marina are ok. I too think Ruby is going to be getting pretty trendy soon.

Date: 2009-08-23 06:02 pm (UTC)I used to love Ruby, but it's SO popular here (the UK) now that I could never use it. I think it may even have been the most popular girls' name last year. Josie I like as a nickname for Josephine. Fiona I used to love but I've gone off it a bit recently - I think it sounds a little dated and dull.
Actually, I think they're all pretty good.

Date: 2009-08-23 06:16 pm (UTC)I do like Marina, but I don't know why your fiancé thinks it's Irish. Because it's not. Ruby and Josie are both a little too posh, but Josephine would be beautiful. Though I'd pick a few other nns over Josie anyday. But I LOVE Fiona. I'd consider using it myself, and your fiancé certainly must favor it if he would like an Irish name.

Date: 2009-08-23 07:49 pm (UTC)Marina is a real name. It's from Marinus-- from the Roman family name Marinus, which derives either from the name MARIUS or from the Latin word marinus "of the sea". Lots of real names are also words (Joey is a name and also a baby kangaroo, for example).
I like Ruby a lot. Josie and Fiona are okay, but I don't like them.

Date: 2009-08-24 11:48 am (UTC)yes, my fiance loves fiona. it was his suggestion!
i love josie and josephine, but he doesnt like josephine, even though josie is currently our number one (i would say it recently blew past our former number one, which was ruby) and he is absolutely MADLY in love with JOSIE! plus middle name will be colleen, so yea...
also, i dont like any other nicknames for josephine (hate joey on a girl, for example)
