my dear fiance brought up the name phoebe a couple of days ago.

i told him flat out that i didnt like it, but now i am reconsidering. it is far nicer than his other recent suggestion of marina i swear. the boy is so random. marina is not a name to me, its a place to park boats. he insisted it harkens back to his irish heritage.

only other names we agree on so far are ruby and josie and possibly fiona.

what do you guys think of phoebe?

I notice its increasing in popularity.
It's been mentioned at least 3 times in the last few weeks in this community, whereas before it was one of those never-heard of names.

To me, there's a strong association with Friends that I can't shake off (and I find the Phoebe character to be a tad creepy, along with funny), but I do think it's a great decent name that should be used more :)

I love Ruby and Josephine (nn Josie), while I don't care for Marina, but it IS a legit name ;) If it's for the irish heritage, Maria is an exponentially better name, imo.
I dislike Fiona!

I love Fiona and Marina (but could never use them as I'm very, very, not Irish.) Phoebe and Ruby are nice - I think Ruby might be on the verge of being very popular, and I'd like Phoebe more if I didn't immediately associate it with my friend's sweet but incredibly dumb pet dog. I don't really care for Josie.

I associate it too strongly with Friends, and while I liked the show, I did not like Lisa Kudrow or the character of Phoebe. I prefer all the other names you listed over Phoebe.

One of my Godmother's is called Marina. I think it's beautiful.

I also love Phoebe, Ruby and Fiona, but I don't like Josie. Far too tomboyish for me.

Ruby is incredibly popular in England, so if you're from there, you may want to reconsider.

I like Phoebe.

Fiona is one of my top girl names.
Phoebe is ok, it's cute, but yeah I think of Phoebe from friends when I hear it so it's not that great to me.
Ruby and Marina are ok. I too think Ruby is going to be getting pretty trendy soon.

I like Marina.
People don't seem to have problems with other names that have more than one purpose. *shrugs*

I think Marina is pretty. I like it more than Phoebe, which is quite nice too although I'm not crazy for it...

I used to love Ruby, but it's SO popular here (the UK) now that I could never use it. I think it may even have been the most popular girls' name last year. Josie I like as a nickname for Josephine. Fiona I used to love but I've gone off it a bit recently - I think it sounds a little dated and dull.

Actually, I think they're all pretty good.

Phoebe seems kind of foofy to me... like Chloe or Zoe. It has the same feel; therefore, I think it will continue to rise in popularity. It's not a bad name though, just bright and hyper and a little ditzy.

I do like Marina, but I don't know why your fiancé thinks it's Irish. Because it's not. Ruby and Josie are both a little too posh, but Josephine would be beautiful. Though I'd pick a few other nns over Josie anyday. But I LOVE Fiona. I'd consider using it myself, and your fiancé certainly must favor it if he would like an Irish name.

Phoebe's alright. I don't like it, but I wouldn't really think twice if I met someone with the name. I just think of Friends.

Marina is a real name. It's from Marinus-- from the Roman family name Marinus, which derives either from the name MARIUS or from the Latin word marinus "of the sea". Lots of real names are also words (Joey is a name and also a baby kangaroo, for example).

I like Ruby a lot. Josie and Fiona are okay, but I don't like them.

I like Marina so much more than Phoebe! I think it's really pretty. I really love Ruby and Fiona too, and I like Josie as well (but not anything that it might be short for).

Phoebe is alright. To me, its sound isn't very mature. Bright and bubbly on a child, but on an adult, I tend to picture them kind of...ditzy. =/

Of the others, I dislike Marina and Josie, -hate- Ruby, and kind-of like Fiona.

I'd choose Marina over Phoebe hands down. Phoebe is just plain ugly IMO, which I thought even before I had really gross personal associations with that name... Marina is more namelike and feminine to me, as opposed to fee-bee (fee be, feeble, phobic) And I still like "a place to park boats" over any of those.
So, of the names you listed, the order I'd put them in is:
Fiona
Ruby
Marina
Josie
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand

.

.
.phoebe.

I like Phoebe and Marina...I must have terrible taste in names.

I like Josie and Fiona, too.

I prefer all the other names too.

Probably, in this order:
Ruby, Marina, Josie, Fiona
They're all quite nice, but I don't like Phoebe much.

I don't like Joey on a girl either, though I don't mind Jo. But have you thought of Sophie, Effie, or Fina?
