One of the few names we both liked was "Clayton" but then there was a high-profile murder case here where the accused was Clayton-- and he was a scary narcissistic jerk.
Nah. I thought the same thing when my grandmother suggested the name we're going to be using and I asked where she'd heard it and she said "I read it in the obituaries this morning".
If you like Dexter, use it! No one is going to know (its not quite like you're naming him Manson or Dahmer), and maybe I'm weird but I would think it was pretty cool if my mom had gotten my name from a serial killer. Although I'm a little obsessed with serial killers. Reading and watching everything I can about them and whatnot.

nothing wrong with naming your kid after THAT serial killer. i love dexter now because of the show. i'm not sure i'd use it on a kid because the association with dexter's lab still seems to be more prominent (among people of my age group, anyway) but if that ever died down i'd probably use it, at least as a middle name.
Not everyone will think of that Dexter... it's not really an obvious serial killer name. In fact, when I hear Dexter, I think of Dexter's Laboratory. XD
As long as you're not naming him Adolf or Manson, I think you're good.
it's a good name- and as far as serial killers go- he's not so bad I was walking down the street and this older woman was walking this beatiful baby boy in a stroller, we stopped to chat and I asked what his name was, she was kind of embarrassed and said "My daughter named him Dexter" she almost whispered it my husband and I commented that it was a great name and she shrugged and said, "well, it's not what I would have chosen" we just found that funny
Dexter's Lab? Most names can't be ruined by one individual. Of course, on my list of weirder names I'd totally use is one I can't: Angstrom, because it would totally be shortened to Strom and we're better off without that association.
I have to admit, I hate the show and the character (no offence to all those who love it, my mother and my sister do!), so I'm going to try really hard not to let that skew my opinion...
I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with using the name Dexter. After all, it's not like you're naming him Charles Manson. A lot of people know about the TV show, but by the time the kid's in school, maybe it will be less well-known. And even so, it's not like the Dexter on the show is the only Dexter ever, so that the name is always automatically associated with him.
I'd say the negative side of it would be that some people might think it's weird if they find out that you named him Dexter because of the character; but even worse, your kid might not appreciate being named because of a serial killer, even if it's not directly AFTER one. Or the kid might think it's funny or cool, and not have a problem with it. In the end, you'll have to decide if you want to take the chance.
The show is called Dexter. It's on Showtime and it's about a guy who works for the Miami police as a blood splatter analyst but is also a serial killer. (He only kills other murderers, though. Mostly.)
Dexter (nn Dex) is on our short list of boys' names. I hadn't really heard of the show until AFTER we'd put it on the list. I just finished watching the first season and it's still on our list. There's such a lack of boys' names both my husband and I agree on, I wouldn't take it off simply because of a tv character having the name. :) If we have a boy, regardless of the first name, the middle name will be Robert after my grandpa.

I'm sure there's lots of good combos but it's late and that's as far as my brain went.

Date: 2009-08-14 05:31 pm (UTC)Dexter makes me think of C.K. Dexter Haven, Cary Gran'ts character from The Philadelphia story. So that makes it sound pretty good to me.
"The boy's name Dexter \dex-ter\ is pronounced DEKS-ter. It is of Latin and Old French origin, and its meaning is "right-handed; woman dyer". "
"From an occupational surname meaning "one who dyes" in Old English. It also coincides with the Latin word dexter meaning "right-handed, skilled"."
I thought of Dexter's Lab also.
