[identity profile] alexandria-skye.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

anyone here watch "warehouse 13"? the main female character is named micah. at first i was a little iffy on it because i see micah as a masculine name, but it grew on me, especially after watching for a while and realizing that it's quite suitable for the character. then i found out that it's spelled "myka". oh, "syfy"... you and your "y"s (and our respective "why?"s). thoughts, anyone?

also, please drop off names you see as unisex (or names that you've seen others use as unisex). i'm curious, so i'm compiling a list. thanks!

edit: sorry for the repost on "myka", guys!

Definitely don't like the spelling Myka. But when I was younger I used to love Mika (pronounced Micah) on a girl. I didn't know then that Micah was an actual name - and a boy's name at that.

I think I still prefer the spelling Mika for a girl and Micah for a boy.

I like Micah and Mika, but not Myka.

Micah is unisex to me, but Mika/Myka are definitely female.

Miley Cyrus's little sister is named Noah. Riley comes to mind, also.

There are very few names I actually consider unisex but Riley would be one of them (despite the fact that I hate that name). I can also see how Avery is unisex (again, I hate it), and I suppose Taylor and Jordan have gotten to the point now that they are.

Also, Morgan.

I do not like Micah/Myka on a girl at all.

i love that show! i dislike micah on a girl. and myka is even worse. i love micah for a boy, though!

my boyfriend's theory is that syfy is trying to look more modern and less "geeky." there's nothing wrong with sci fi! i almost want to stop watching the channel because of the name change! haha.

(btw, this name from warehouse 13 has been posted already)

Micah is boys' only for me; Myka is...blah; I don't like it.
With Mika, the Japanese pronunciation is always my first thought, so, to me, this is Mee-ka.

I remember reading somewhere that they changed the name to Syfy so they could copyright it or whatever- they can't do that with Sci-fi. =/

My best friend growing up was Mica - pronounced Mee-ka. She got Micah all the time.

I don't find many names unisex, here are a few:
(I consider almost all of these more feminine, but have seen them on both boys and girls)

Dana (I've got both and Aunt and Uncle with this name)
Jamie
Robin
Riley
Brett (Actually consider this more masculine)

We haven't had cable in about 5 years, is it really SyFy now? Really???

Yes, they changed it to SyFy less than a year ago, I believe (fairly recently, anyway). It's pretty atrocious. :/

I don't like Micah on girls, and especially not with weird spellings.

I've been seeing Elliott mentioned for girls lately. Ugh. :/ Other names:
Jordan
Morgan (I prefer as masc, but /shrug)
Taylor
Tyler
Riley
Alexis

the first time i ever heard the name micah, i thought it was a girl. turned out to be a big football playing frat boy. ever since then, i have seen it as a male name, though not necessarily the most masculine name on earth.

hate any creative spellings of it.

some unisex names...

cameron
avery
taylor
jordan
bailey
morgan
riley

i dont like any of the modern unisex names...

i do love jamie and casey, but only on boys.

I don't think any names are unisex.
