It seems that ending names with -anna or -ana is a popular trend at the moment. So Julia, Lily, etc are becoming Juliana, Liliana.
I don't really mind the trend, just think it's starting to go a little overboard.
What is the most unusual/new/invented/over-the-top/interesting -anna/-ana name you've heard lately? (basically anything that has probably sprung up out of obscurity in the last 10 years)
Mine is Aureliana.

Date: 2009-08-14 12:10 am (UTC)Here's my pet peeve: -ana, -ano endings in names come from the Latin and have the same purpose of -son endings, meaning "daughter/ son of" (typically the father's name at the time)
So Aureliana by the Romans would mean "daughter of Aurelio".
What bothers me is that in english it somehow doesn't matter whether it's one consonant or two, because everything is read the same. So -ana has become -anna, but this changes the meaning of the name and makes it look like a "clever" blend with the name Anna/Anne.
For example, Adriana or Juliana is the original form, but now we see bunches of Adrianna's and Julianna's. I can't quite stand it :P
The only legit exception would be Mariana (which is really uncommon) and Marianna, because the latter is actually meant to be Maria+Anna.

Date: 2009-08-14 12:12 am (UTC)Yeah I'm not talking about names not being legit - I'm expecting some of them to be made up and some to be real but only being used again recently. I don't like Aureliana because it is so long and frilly. Aurelia is already enough imo.

Date: 2009-08-14 12:18 am (UTC)I agree with what th3 unicorn said though. There's a difference between -ana and -anna. Changing Juliana to Julianna changes what the name is entirely.

Date: 2009-08-14 12:21 am (UTC)A while ago I would have done the same- I love the name Anna on its own so I do tend to like that sound in names. But currently I find them too frilly if it's already a really long name like Aureliana.
I didn't actually realise until these comments though that -anna and -ana had different roots, I must admit I thought they were interchangeable. What about Brianna? How did that originate? I am guessing it is just someone deciding to feminise Brian.

Date: 2009-08-14 12:48 am (UTC)Brianna is a feminine form of Brian. I'm not sure why it has two Ns. Briana is a legitimate feminine form too, so perhaps Brianna is just what has become more popular in our lifetime. Perhaps because the spelling Briana indicates more of a pronunciation like Brian + a rather than bree-AN-a? Brian + a is the only pronunciation I like of that name anyway.

Date: 2009-08-14 06:30 am (UTC)I understand that names like Liliana and Juliana are legitimate names, but honestly I think almost any ----ana name just sounds trashy and made up. (At least to me.)

Date: 2009-08-14 06:33 am (UTC)Yes that is what I meant - normal names with Anna added. Although I acknowledge that Aureliana is real and Zoeyanah is not.
How about.. Nataliana, Loreleiana, Charlottana, Isabellanna ... ok I think I need to stop
