WDYT of Thisbe? Cute, dorky, pretentious or other?

Definitely cute! A little pretentious, but that's not a crime.

I've only seen it spelled Thysbe and it looks more complete to me that way.
I'm not sure about pronunciation so I'm not sure how I like it.

I've only seen it spelt Thisbe like in the Roman mythology. It's pronounced Thiz-bee.

I assume you mean like Pyramus and Thisbe?

My main association of course is the rustic's play from A Midsummer Night's Dream I love Midsummer's so it strikes me fondly.

wow... I did months of this play when I was actiojg full on and since I had never really *read* the play in english I was like 'where have I heard this before?' so thank you =D

OP - I htink it's cute, not too sure about usable.

Don't worry, I think I've done 4 or 5 different roles in this play, and I've directed it.

As for usable, it's not so different from Phoebe and alot easier to spell.

yeah, I acted in it (which I realised I spelt acting actiojg??) for a few months and got a local award but yeah the play was in spanish.

I do agree with the Phoebe thing... I know a lot of people who don't have english as their first language go for Pheobe a lot.

Oh, I see, I was a little confused how you could do the play without reading it, but the "in spanish" part explains that.

You know, I'm really warming up to Thisbe. I think I'm going to put it on my list of favorite and interesting names. It's unique and easy to pronounce with a great history. It's kind of like the original Juliet.

I mean, Phoebe is a name from greek mythology with a somewhat similar sound that's harder to spell, but it got popular. Thisbe could be next!

I was just thinking it's probably OK as long as you don't have a son named Pyramus too.

THIS! I love A Midsummer Night's Dream :D Although my favorite name from it was Lysander. I don't have the balls to use it though!

on the right person it would be cute and slightly pretentious, but on the wrong person it would just be really dorky and they'd get made fun of and probably hate their name.

I agree, you would have to be sure that you're Thisbe sort of parents, and your daughter would be a Thisbe kind of girl.

that's weird, because I was just thinking about this name the other day. I like the sound, I do feel like it's kind of pretentious. Or a lot, but whatever.

I honestly can only think of John Lennon in a drag. Fellow Beatle geeks here? :) It's definitely a unique name, though kinda pretentious, as mentioned.

*in drag? In a drag? I don't know how it's said in English. Anyway, dressed as a woman.

I love Midsummer Night's Dream, but I don't like this name. Like someone said, it's similar to Phoebe, which I also don't like.

Makes me think of a dog. Whether as a Frisbee or as a dog name. It would actually probably be a good dog name.

I do think it's a little pretentious, but I don't mind pretentious names all that much ;)
It sounds pretty. The Pyramus & Thisbe story is very sad though, but in a beautiful way (like Romeo & Juliet).

Long standing name or not, it's stupid. It's like someone with a lisp trying to say frisbee, and a frisbee is what someone named that today, would constantly run into as a teasing factor. The fact that it just looks like the words this and be slapped together, also makes it stupid. Not all ancient names are good just because they've been around longer than newer names, so people think they're classic and chic to use.
