Vega

My husband poked around in one of the baby names books we have, and his new favorite name is Vega. It is listed in the book as an exclusively female name but as far as my searches on the internet show, its a boys name?

I actually kind of like the name, but its going to take a little time to grow on me. Our daughter will be of mixed race--I'm caucasian and my husband is half hispanic half asian which I think makes a little bit of a difference in naming her. I'd like something a little more unique/ethnic.

Tell me what you think,  Vega?

I immediately think of Vegan... and Vegas. Heh.

I don't personally like it, but it's not a bad name I guess.

I could see it going both ways. Its very unique and i think would fit a child of hispanic ethnic background

It's the car we had in the 70's - a Chevy Vega.

I actually kind of like it (as a girl's name).

I think of the Street Fighter character (male). Also, Vegas.
It's alright, but not my style.

I don't care for it, but I don't hate it or anything.

Vega

from Behind The Name
The name of a star in the constellation Lyra. Its name is from Arabic الواقع (al-Waqi') meaning "the swooping (eagle)".

From Think Baby Names
The girl's name Vega \v(e)-ga\ is of Arabic origin, and its meaning is "falling vulture". Name of the brightest star in the group of stars called Lyra.

Vega is not in the top 1000 female names for any year of birth in the last 100 years in the US.

I like it for a girl (aside the Vegan teasing), but are you pronouncing it?
Vay-gah, Veh-gah or Beh-gah (closer to the spanish) ?

I thought of Spy Kids. Alexa Vega. But I figure that that's not going to be the first thought in many people's minds. The more I say it, the uglier it seems.

The only way I would understand it being misconstrued as a male name would be if it were a surname used as a first name.

Also, I don't like it. And if a name doesn't strike you as something you like right away I'd look somewhere else. There are way better ethnic names you can use.

I really love it. I think it works for both a girl and a boy, but my first thought was the Street Fighter character Vega (male). But I always loved his name anyway. :)

A little more ethnic? As opposed to what? All names are ethnic, they just reflect different ethnicities.

I don't think that a child should have to be named differently (more uniquely) simply because they are mixed raced/multiracial or hail from different ethnic backgrounds. Plus, I just don't like the name Vega -- I guess it would be different if the name was linked to your or your husband's background, but picking a random name because it sounds "different" because the child will be mixed race seems...pretentious.

It's my son's last name. Don't like it as a first name.
