[identity profile] skittles22088.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

My husband and I have the very German last name of Raeder and I was wondering what everyone's favorite Germanic names are.  So, what are they?  Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure how germanic this is, but I knew a german lady named Cornelia (Cor-NEH-lee-ah) and I thought it was very fitting of the "german attitude".

One teutonic name I like is Brigitta (Breeg-eatt-ah) and variations of.
And also Adelaide (Ah-del-EYE-deh) and Lodemai (LO-deh-my).

Felix (plan on using it), Dietrich (plan on using it), Friedrich (love but probably won't use), Franziska (ditto), Karl (undecided on whether I want to use it or not). I love lots of German names--I'm 1/2 German and my partner is fully German.

Gretchen is only used as a nickname for Margarete in Germany, as far as i know. So it is not a real name in Germany.

I find it so fascinating how much of an cultural thing that his, what we think about names. There are German names that I absolutely wouldn't use, because they're too old (seriously, Adelheid, Helmut, that would be just weird) or because of bad associations (Dieter, Detlef, ew!). But in another country they could be so usable.
Hm, hard to list German names, because what is German? There are those names that are common here, but really aren't German (like Rene and Sven). Some names we share with other countries, maybe hard to tell where they came from. And then there are those old school, definitely German names that aren't usable anymore. Mostly.
So here's my list of more or less usable names we share with other countries or not:

Andrea
Andreas
Anke
Ariane
Armin (okay, one of the old ones on the list, but I like it because we had a cool teacher with that name)
