A high school friend of mine just had a baby girl:

Erika Skye

Totally not my taste at all. IMO, adding an "e" at the end of the word sky does not make it a name. Also, spelling Erika with a "k"... doesn't do anything for me. WDYT?

She could have done worse, I suppose!

ETA: Okay, so maybe Skye is indeed a "real" name, but I am still not a fan of it. Just not my style!

the name itself is meh in a trendy way but the spelling makes it trashy.

Definitely not my style, but you're right - it could be much worse!

I think I've decided I don't like the name Erika. Which is kind of weird, considering how close my own name is to it. Anything Sky, Skye, Skylar, it's all trash.

I actually don't mind it, especially compared to other things here. I prefer Erica but the K doesn't ruin it completely. And I don't see much wrong with Skye, though I wouldn't use it myself.

Eh, Skye's a real name, and Erika is tthe Japanese/Scandinavian(?) spelling, not just a kr8tive one. I don't think I'd ever use it, but it's pretty.

It's not a name I'd choose, but Skye is a real name. It's a Scottish Isle and it's been used as a name for a long time.

Ditto! With the exception that it IS a name I'd choose. ;) Regardless, it is a "real" name.

(Although, quite frankly, anything can be a name. I think it's good to step outside the box and look at everyday words that could be nice enough to become a name.) :)

Skye's been around the past twenty years or so that I know of. It's not to my taste but I don't think its as deserving of as much hate as people seem to give it. The name is from the Isle of Skye, and not just a creative spelling of sky, so for me it's not on the same level as some.

Yup, I suspect the greater portion of people don't know anything about the names they choose :) Behind the Name says that sometimes Skye is considered a variant of Sky, so without knowing their motives, I guess you can't really say either way whether the parents intended it to be the real-name-Skye, or the creative-spelling-of-sky.

I just need to say your icon makees me smile stupidly... as for the Skye ting... I'm on your boat with the whole you can't really know buuut at the same time it's a place's name... does it makes Bronx a legit name in 20 years? Not so sure... but well maybe it means something to the family?

I've seen an equal number of Erica and Erika in real life. I don't prefer one over the other, really.

But I'm with you on Skye - not my taste either.

Erika is a legit name, too.

I prefer Erika spelled Arica

Wow, I like that.

I wouldn't look at "Arica" and think to pronounce it like Erika. IT looks like Ah-ree-ca to me.

that looks like Africa at first glance.

I prefer Erica over Erika but I know they are both legit spellings.

I don't like Skye that much.

When I lived in the US I had a German friend and his mother wouild pull me aside and say 'I like your name in German, with a K' and I've always kind of smiled when I see Monica spelled Monika. I'd not use it because my family is hispanic and would not get it but it's the cvariation of my name I don't mind at all =)

That's why I'm Erika and not Erica, lol. My grandfather (who was of German ancestry) insisted I have a German name (I was his first born granddaughter), but my mom insisted on Erica. They compromised.

I kind of think the spelling Erika looks pretty, especially the more I look at it.

I prefer Erica spelled with a C, and I think Erika Skye seems to be too much repetition of the letter K. That said, it does sound sort of nice. NMS, but nice.

I like it, but I'm highly biased, being an Erika myself. :)

Edit: Okay, not a big fan of Skye, TBH. (And any middle name but mine - Megan - looks weird to me)

I love Skye. It's one of the few trendy-ish names that I really like.

I don't like Erika though...but it's not awful!

It's not great, but it's not horrible.

I prefer Erica with a c, if at all. I used to love this name growing up, but now it sounds pretty dated to me.

I like Erika, it would be the norwegian spelling of Erica. Not that it really matters, people use C's for K's and K's for C's in Norway all the time, but yeah. I like it.
