I knew this was a real name that I'd seen before. How do you pronounce it?

sorry, i just realised i hadn't replied to your comment in the right place.
my pronounciation explanation is in a comment to the main post.

haha it's welsh :)
i always have a problem describing how its pronounced, i always say it's said like Sharn, but apparently if you are american an r after a vowel is said more like a H and then it becomes Shahn wich isn't quite right.

It's the female version of Sean, but where Sean has an Uhr sound in the middle Sian has an Ahr sound.

sorry if this isn't any help at all :P

Like it rhymes with yarn? (I'm American but when I say "Sean," I don't make any "uhr" sound - I say it as "shawn.")

yeahh it does rhyme with yarn. thats a much simpler explanation lol.

Siân is a Welsh name. I see someone named Siân already got to that. :) It's okay I guess, but I don't like it too much because it's too close to the first syllable of my first name and I dislike being called that.

Sophinette seems like an uncessary elabortion, plus there are very few -ette names I actually like.

And just to add, I looked up the popularity of Siân in England/Wales and it ranked 80th in 1998 and 99th in 1999, so I'm sure it's fallen further since then, but must be fairly common.

Yeah, it's not really uncommon over here. I know several Sians.

Although, my parents recently met someone named Sian who pronounced her name "Sy-ANN"...eek.

I've only ever met 2 or 3 other Siân's.

It is my absolute pet hate when people pronounce my name Sy-ANN i had a teacher once who would always call me that.

Speaking of unnecessary elaboration: Allisondra

[identity profile] penguiny7.livejournal.com 2009-08-06 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm... I might not take that as an elaboration of Allison but rather a variant of Alessandra that just so happens to contain Allison. But either way... ick.

I went to high school with a Sian.
She pronounced it Shawn

I had a good GUY friend through high school named Sian... he pronounced it Sean/Shawn.
