place names

The other day my boyfriend and I were in the car, driving through a sort of bad area, which caused him to start listing other towns nearby that he didn't like. They were Everett, Chelsea, and Lynn. My first reaction was to giggle and point out "those are all names!" That said, I'm pretty sure none of those names can be used by us if only because of his extremely bad association with them. I do love Everett, for a middle name, but also can't help but think of the town.

Does anyone else have any place/name associations? Good or bad. For some reason, I can't help but think of Wisconsin when I hear Madison (damn elementary school and pounding those state capitals into my head), though if I wanted to use the name, I don't think that'd stop me just because I have no personal association with that state. Also, any names you love that most others might associate with a place moreso than a person?

One last thing: are Elliot(t) and Everett too close to use, even if the latter would be a middle name?

I'm named after Meredith, NH. If I lived in the Lakes Region I would avoid that name. It makes people snicker when I visit. On the other hand, that's about the only place I've ever found personalized knick-knacks that included my name.

My grandmother had a house on the lake too. Sold it because she got mad at my mother. Sigh. I'd do anything to have it back again. Of course, it was torn down and some monstrosity built in its place.

I live in Madison, WI so it's pretty much a REALLY obvious association. I'm indifferent about it but I'd definitely never name my child Madison. And it's gotten SO popular now-a-days.

I also know a couple who named their child Zion and all I think of is geography.

Well where I'm from in Maryland we have towns named Leonardtown, Valley Lee, Hollywood, California, Scotland, Lexington Park, Great Mills, Chaptico...so those sort of names aren't really an issue. The capitol is Annapolis so even that one is a no.

I think Everette and Elliot are fine to use together if one is a middle name.

I'm thinking of Laurel as a name, but probably wouldn't use it if I was in Maryland.

Oh yeah, didn't even think of that one. I went to school with a Laurel.

I like Olympia as a name but since I live in Seattle, and Olympia is our state capitol, I could never use it.

My middle name is Lynn. It's old English, I think... it means something about a lake, or coming from a lake. There's a town in England called King's Lynn- the king's lake. I liked the name more when I found that out.

My nephew's name is Everett, and my cousin's so is Elliott. They do get called each other's names sometimes and can be confusing. Adding to this confusion is my niece's name Ella which also sound a bit like Elliott.

If one is a middle name I don't think that it would be a problem though.

My 2nd cousin is naming her daughter Bristol and every time I hear it, all I think of is Tennessee. I do like the name, though. Same for Charlotte. I like the name, but think of NC when I hear it.

Also, I never liked the name Chandler but now I dislike it even more so because it's a town.

Oh hay Boston! I don't really like the name Everett in the first place, but it makes it worse that all I think of when I hear it is "oh! the town with the really good football team?" I don't mind Chelsea and Lynn but they're not really my style.

I'm totally naming my future son Peabody.
