His nickname being Dick isn't weird, it's that it's short for Dickford, not Richard.

If you can seperate the name Dick from the word "penis" in your head for a minute, it's a nice sounding name. I can see why someone would have been named that if they weren't born in recent years. It's completely unusable from now on though.
