your own sibset
Jul. 19th, 2009 01:03 pmFamily related questions. First, what are the names of the sibset you're in (assuming you have siblings?) Do you think your parents did a good job of making your names sound good together? Second, are there any names that you love that you can't use due to usage by other family members? And third.. any sibsets in your family (whether it be your own children, your sibling's, a cousin, whatever) that you really like?
(my answers)
1) Jessica Lynne, Eric Donald, Brian Nicholas
Donald and Nicholas are my grandfather's names... I think the combo sounds good, but maybe that's just because I grew up to being "Jessica, Eric, and Brian" all of my life.
2) Personally, there's very little that would stop me from using a name I like (I figure there's a high chance they'll have friends or classmates with the same name as them anyway) BUT I've always loved "Riley" for a girl but feel I cannot use it since it would be a cousin to a boy, Riley James. The same name but different genders is just a little too much for me.
3) The names have all gotten a lot more popular recently, but I still love them regardless. Let me also note that my grandmother is 100% Irish and these are the children of three of her nieces (so, my mother's cousins.. also strictly Irish). Unfortunately I don't know middle names. Conor (13), Riley (f 12), and Aidan (8). Colleen (8) and Ciara (7). Liam (7).

Date: 2009-07-19 05:11 pm (UTC)I think it's alright, but I'm not a fan of K names so it bugs me a little.
My husband's sibset: Kevin Ryan, Heather Lynn, and Jessica Marie
I think it's very telling of the era they were born in (mid 80s to mid 90s). Overall, they're not bad names... just a little too generic for my taste.
My cousins' kids have great names: Lily, Zoe, and Julian. I love all three names but will obviously never use them because they belong to my cousins' kids.

Date: 2009-07-19 05:21 pm (UTC)2) I can't use Dylan since my nephew is named that. I also can't use Nicholas, Cody, Michael, or Chelsea.
3) Now that I think about it, there aren't many that I like lol. I like my nephews (Dylan and Tyler), and I like my mother's (Cindy, James, and Stephen).

Date: 2009-07-19 05:28 pm (UTC)My DH's sibset: Simon James (27), David Michael (24), and Samuel Clarke (18). It's an absolute accident that they're nearly all biblical names - they're just names my mother-in-law liked at the time. David insists on spelling his shortening Dayv, which makes me wretch. Sam is always Sam, never Samuel. Out of these, I love the name James and would definitely use it.
Not quite in my family, but a friend of the family has two little girls called Ilana (Hebrew for tree) and Seraphina, which I think is an adorable sibset.

Date: 2009-07-19 05:37 pm (UTC)i really love the name david, but i couldn't use it. i'm not into naming after family members in the first place, but i couldn't use one brothers name and not the other (and i would not subject my kid to being named peter) and david is named after his father anyway, and i hate him.
my family kind of sucks at naming, but my least favorite is definitely dustin and audra. such hicky names, i think. but maybe it's because i associate them with hicky people.

Date: 2009-07-19 05:44 pm (UTC)Like you, I think it sounds fine but it might be because I grew up with it. The first two are half brothers and they're 10 years older than my full brother so we heard "Josh and Cassie" most often and I think our names go really well together.
2) There aren't names that I can't use but there are names that I won't use. I won't use any name of any person I was decently close to just because I'm not comfortable with it.
3) I have no clue of the names of most of my family lol so not really. Well, there's one sibset that I remember loving but I no longer remember all of the names. Austin, Devin, Connor...and I think there's a 4th but I can't think of his name.

Date: 2009-07-19 05:48 pm (UTC)2. There's not that many kids in my family, so this really isn't a problem. We're really close to my dad's side of the family because they all live in the same city, and none of my cousins or anyone have any children or are planning on it. My mom's family lives all over the country, and I don't know 99% of them, so even if there were kids with names I was planning on using, it wouldn't matter.
3. My brother's kids are Cane Callahan and Evelyn Scarlett. I love Evelyn Scarlett and would've possibly used it if he hadn't, but I'm not too fond of Cane Callahan. The only other sibsets I can think of are Chris & Nichole and Brenae & Brenna, which I wouldn't ever use.

3. My cousin's two girls are Madison and Jayden. I've never been too crazy about those names, but together, they make sense.

Date: 2009-07-19 06:00 pm (UTC)I really like my name. When I was younger I wasn’t a fan, but I’ve grown really attached to it. I don’t really like my sister’s name. It’s just too generic. Although, I do like Jessica and Lindsey as a sibset. My first name was the name of a girl in my sister’s preschool class that my mom liked and saved in her memory. My middle name was going to be Michelle after my cousin (Wendi Michelle), but my mom found Renee’ in a baby book at the last minute and changed it because she thought it looked cool. My sister’s first name was just a name my mom liked. Lee is a family name that my mom wanted to use, but my grandfather thought it looked too masculine (all the people in my family with Lee are male) so he told her to spell it Lea.
(2&3)I don’t really like many of my family’s names for the younger generation. The only sibset in my family that I remotely like are Chandler (9), Cameron (3), and MaKenna (6 months). They all flow and match closely in popularity. All the other sibsets have a name that seems out of place that makes me dislike the sibset. The only name I really have an issue with using is Acadia. My family is pretty Cajun and proud of it and I think it’s a cute name with a cute/normal nickname (Cadie), but my favorite little cousin’s name is Katie (7) (and only Katie…not a nickname) and it would seem weird to have two. I haven’t totally thrown out the name because she is my favorite little cousin and I think she could appreciate being honored in that way.

Date: 2009-07-19 06:11 pm (UTC)Yes I do.
No names used by my family that I want to use, my family's pretty boring when it comes to naming. I've got the most exotic so I'm good.
Erika Dawn and AJ would me my faves from my family.
Also, Keri and Erin. They're twins.

Date: 2009-07-19 06:12 pm (UTC)Both names are very common in the French speaking countries for girls our age (or slighly older), and I heard of other sisters named the name. They do sound good together, in my opinion. I used to wish my parents had found something more original but well, it's better than having a weird name that no one can spell or pronounce correctly (strange thing to say, now that go by Cybèle! lol).
2) I don't want children, but if I did, I don't think that using a name that one of my relatives already used would be a problem, considering I practicaly never see any of them. I guess I would avoid using Alexandre or Cédric, though, because there are already two of both in the family. But I would probably want something more original, anyway.
3) I quite like Alexandre and Romane and Jonathan and Nicolas (these are only half-siblings, though - does it still count?).

Date: 2009-07-19 06:13 pm (UTC)2) None of my favourite names have been used in the family, and I don't think they would be because I've made my views on names very clear and my sisters know there would be hell to pay if they stole one of my names!
3)My cousins are Georgina Jane and Alexandra Grace. They're called Georgie and Ally (Ally is never Alexandra). I think together with their last name they're a gorgeous sibset.

Date: 2009-07-19 06:30 pm (UTC)I think it's okay, but everyone in my family has a "J" name and I don't really like themes.
2) Yes. I love the name Alice, but my aunt's name is Alice and I don't want her to be unnecessarily flattered, because it would not be in honor of her, so that could be kind of odd.
3) Well, partially. My stepfather and his siblings were an alright sibset: Maxwell, Christopher Paul (my stepfather - I don't know the rest of the mns), Elizabeth, Gene and John. I like the first three names.

Date: 2009-07-19 06:34 pm (UTC)2) I really love the name Nathaniel and my cousin's name is Nathan. Not sure if that puts me off entirely though, since we're not close and don't see each other more than once a year. However, we're the same age and I'm sure the rest of the family would see it as a bizarro homage.
My boyfriend AND his older half sister go by Sam. He's Samuel and she's Samantha. I honestly have no idea what his parents were thinking.

Date: 2009-07-19 06:52 pm (UTC)My husband's sibset is Jason Alexander, David Alexander, Jessica Lynn and Kymberly Lynn. It's all right but kind of weird that all of the guys have the same middle name and all of the girls have the same middle name. They do the same thing with giving a middle name to their dogs! I also don't like that the one kid has a trendy spelling while everyone else is normal. But that's okay.
We're having the first kid on either side so I don't have any sib sets to compare our name to.

Date: 2009-07-19 07:00 pm (UTC)yes. cousins have used the names elizabeth, scout, rowan, jamie and grace. also i love the name genevieve, but i already have a cousin named geneva, so i think it might be a little odd. i am on the fence about it. also, brother and fathers middle name is owen. cant use that either.
my fiancees family has the most names i would love to use but cant now. zoe, max, rose, rowan, jack (thats my guy, actually, so i suppose we could, but he isnt into it)

Date: 2009-07-19 07:02 pm (UTC)2) There isn't really any names that are off-limits in my family. I have a cousin named Samuel who goes by Sam like I do, and he's a week younger than me. We're pretty close too, so we joke about it sometimes.
3) I have two step-nephews named Owen and Kyle. I think it's a great sibset!

Date: 2009-07-19 07:09 pm (UTC)John Edward is our dad's name so my brother is a junior but other than that my mom just picked my and my sister's names randomly.
2) I have a rather large extended family that I don't know all of so I don't think any names are off limits at the moment. I wouldn't use the names my brother and sister use, although I don't think I have to worry too much about that. My sister likes names like Grier and I'm more an Emma/Sophie kind of person.
3). I like my cousins Daniel Paul and Livia Irene's names. Then there's Samuel, Phillip, and Joseph (nn Sam and Joe), Kristopher and Brian (nn Kris), and Heather and Charles (nn Charlie). They're all pretty plain/traditional for the most part but that's my style.

Date: 2009-07-19 07:14 pm (UTC)2. I will not use any of the names of cousins/cousins' kids. I have a very large but very close family, and it's confusing enough without repeating names. There are several names, like Michael and Joseph, that I would use as middle names, but I aim to have first names unique to my family.
3. Some sibsets in my family that I like: David & Michael. Victoria, Colin & Owen. Marguerite, Jillian & Evan.

Date: 2009-07-19 07:51 pm (UTC)I really like the way my sister's name looks. It flows nicely. And I guess my name's okay, haha. I had problems with being Amanda but now I'm fine with it. Deborah and Daniel are also each other's half-sibs, but I think their names go together well.
My cousin used a name that I had my heart set on: Natalia (and she was born the day after my birthday so double-heartbreak, hah). I'm still planning on using it because 1. Natalia will be WAY older than my daughter, 2. I'm want to name my daughter Natalie, not Natalia, and 3. It's got a special meaning to me. I also have a cousin named Elias, but I want to use it as a middle name.
I love Samuel, Elias, and Zachary (I think his name is actually Zacharias, though...which was my grandmother's maiden name), my cousin Maria's sons. That's probably my favorite sibset. I figured out that most of my cousins have the name Maria as their first or middle name, and so I can't say I have a favorite sibset there.

Date: 2009-07-19 07:58 pm (UTC)I like the names Nicholas and Cameron, but I don't want to use them because I have cousins name Nicolas and Cameron.
I always liked the names of my great-grandma and her sisters: Marjorie Martha, Thora Jane, Rhoda Emily May, Alice Ruth, and Leila. I just think they're kind of cool.

Date: 2009-07-19 08:58 pm (UTC)2- we have a cousin who named their daughter Ariella (which I do really like- don't know if we would've used it or would if not for her- but it would've made my list)
3- my kids are Laila Rhiannon and Benjamin Joseph...I like both the names don't get me wrong- but, I find people have a hard time spelling Laila correctly and want to spell it Layla, Leila...there are quite a few ways and also, when they see it sometimes they pronounce it Lie-luh (annoying)
