[identity profile] 120508.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

I am looking for suggestions of girl names that are real names, but extremely uncommon/unpopular. My husband likes very original names-- as close as you can get to a made-up name without actually being a made-up name.

Help?

My favorite name is Karigan, which isn't very popular, especially with that spelling. It's more popular with the spelling Carrigan.

Kerrigan is also a nice spelling.

the lead character in a book I loved in highschool was Karigan, and I've loved the name since then. It's so much better than the Carrigan spelling.

Yep. :-D

For a while I actually found Kristen Britain's web forum and would "talk" with her online.

There's a third book in the series that I haven't read yet - I'm going to re-read the first two then try and pick it up from the library.

Try looking at the bottom 500 (500-1000) of the SSA list (http://www.socialsecurity.gov/cgi-bin/popularnames.cgi). Honestly, unless you make the name up, it isn't really original. The names, especially further down the list, aren't all that popular. Emma (the #1) represents .9% of all female births. Elianna (#1000) represents .0127% of all female babies.

http://www.socialsecurity.gov/OACT/babynames/namesbystate.html -- This will tell you the popular names for your state. So while Emma might be the most popular in the nation, Olivia could be the most popular in your state.

Try looking up historical records from the 1700s and 1800s. Also look at other languages. You could use words from other languages (such as Jolie, which is "pretty" in French).

Quite a few Greek, Hebrew and Serbian or Kroatian names are uncommon, without sounding completely crazy.

If you're American, try some true Irish baby names - they look made up to the average American and they're pronounced totally different from how they're spelled!

but honestly, they are SO TRENDY right now that even if you pick one that no one else has used over here for the past 3 centuries, it'll sound trendy.

my dh has an ex named Danilu. I really love that name, too bad she's an ex or I'd use it for any upcoming daughters of our own!

Germaine, Esther, Greta, Ingrid, all names I've either used or considered using for daughters.

what you need if you want "real but uncommon" is to pull them out of history. I'll second the suggestion of using that social security name site to look up names from a century ago.
