Jul. 13th, 2009 04:24 amYesterday I was at a family party and I met my uncles girlfriend and her daughter Charisma.
I didnt hear a nn at all either way I think the name is horrible, Shes 10 I just kept thinking what if she turns out to be a dull person and the name is more ironic than anything :-/
WDYT?

Date: 2009-07-14 08:24 pm (UTC)I am most familiar with Arabic names and meanings:
Habiba- love
Imam- faith
Shams- sun
Nur- light
said- happy
karim- generous
ok, now I am going on a tangent... but hey, it's still relevant so here I go...
The prophet Mohammed (pbuh) was of the idea that as long as the name represented a good quality, then it was a good name. It's been documented that he was known to actually change people's names (once he changed a man's name from Lonely to something else, but I forgot what).. who would name their child Lonely? It just goes to show that bad names is not something new to this generation (or culture!) only.
On yet another tangent, in Spanish there are names Soledad and Dolores. Dolores means "pain" and Soledad has a double meaning "lonliness" and "sunshine". I kinda like Soledad, in the sense that maybe it will lack "irony" because the child can be soledad in the sense of "sunshine" when she is in a good mood and "loneliness" when in a bad mood.
To finally get back to your point...
I shy away from "character" names for the same reason as you.. the potential for lifetime irony. But I think that the idea is, people will try to live up to their names... I do believe that.
But all that being said, I still probably wouldn't name my child Charisma.
