People wouldn't call a young Peter 'Pete' nowadays, would they? Because I love Peter but HATE Pete.

What names do you love but really dislike a nickname for it? Would you hesitate to use them because of this?

I think Franklin is kinda cute, but I hate the nn Frank so I probably wouldn't use it.

I love James but I hate Jim. I still want to use the name though. I figure if my kid wants to be called Jim it's not the end of the world, and I don't have to call him that anyway.

I don't see this as an issue. My brother is Andrew and my mom just insisted he have no nicknames to other people he was introduced to (she HATES Andy) and he's just always been Andrew to everyone.

I also have a friend named Peter and no one calls him Pete

Love Catherine - not too fond of Cathy/Catie (when I think Catie, I think Caitlin.. don't mind it as a nickname for that, just for Catherine). I can't really think of any other names I love but hate the nicknames for (I sort of go out of my way to make sure I like any nicknames that could possibly come out of a name). My only real nickname peeve is using the "wrong" nickname, like above, or calling an Alicia "Ali" (in my mind, Ali is supposed to be short for Al(l)ison).

In short, I don't really like when the same nickname is used for multiple names. BUT to answer your question better, if I hated a nickname enough, I probably wouldn't use it. Plenty of other names I love :)

Love Bethany, hate Beth.
Love Kimberly, really really hate Kim.
Love Susan, hate Sue. Susie is okay, I guess.
Love Patrick, hate Pat and Rick.
Love Wesley, hate Wes.

I want to name my daughter Abigail but I'm only luke-warm on Abby and I'd want her to be Abigail all the time. I would still use it though because I love it so much.

I don't think this is as big of an issue as people think it is. I've noticed that people will call a person whatever they're introduced as. If I introduce my son as Benjamin, they'll call him Benjamin. Occasionally they might ask if we call him Ben (which we do, which is why I usually introduce him as Ben). My husband's little brothers are named Joshua and Daniel, and that's what they go by-- not Josh and Dan. It's not an issue for them.

I know two Andrews who are both always called Andrew. It doesn't even cross my mind to call them anything else.

Oh, I forgot to do the second part! There really aren't any names that I like but don't like any nicknames for, but there are some where I don't like a potential nn for them. Like I love William but dislike Bill/Billy, but I love Will and Liam. Or I like Katherine but dislike Katie, but I like Kitty, Kit, and Kate. I like James but dislike Jim, but I like Jamie and Jem. I could go on and on with multiple examples of this, I'm sure.

My name is Fadime. The nickname for Fadime/Fatma is Fatos which is pronounced Fa-tosh. I hate this nickname. Fortunately noboby calls me so. I get angry when somebody says Fatos.

Well, I wouldn't call a young Peter "Pete." But I prefer to call people by their full names anyway.

Love Matthew/Michael, hate Matt/Mike. And I wouldn't use either as first names because of the nick names.

likewise... I grew up with a best friend named Andrew and never once even thought to call him Andy. He introduces himself to other people as Andrew, and that sets the tone.
Although, I do kind of like the nick name Drew for Andrew.

I love Alistair but hate Al. I wouldn;t use the name because of that. It's a pretty long name and I can see people wanting to shorten it.
i liek Bertram but hate Bert. I dont like this name enough to use anyways.

I've coached two Abigails, and I never thought to call them Abby. Their parents introduced them as Abigail, and that's what I called them.

That said, I had a beautiful, wonderful cat named Abby, and tho that sounds weird, I have better associations with that name than with most other names I associate with people.

I have a friend called Abigail and I call her Abby, though. :/ So yep. Mainly because it's a longer name to pronounce, and she doesn't mind either way.

I haven't really thought about it, but I don't think it should discourage you from naming a child Peter anyway because Peter's not a long name and rolls off the tongue easily, so I highly doubt anyone will call him Pete anyway. (:

Also, as long as you don't call him Pete, I don't see what the problem it honestly. I mean, even if his friends call him Pete, it's hardly going to affect you since you wouldn't be within earshot of hearing it anyway. (:

I kinda like Thomas. It works really well with a lot of my other boy options. But, my husband and I both HATE HATE HATE Tommy/Tom/etc. *vomits* So we're looking for better options.

My fiancé and I plan to use the name Anthony for our first son, to honor my fiancé's late father. I like Anthony, but loathe Tony, and we have agreed that we won't call him that. He may still want to go by Tony when he's old enough to decide for himself, but I think I'll be one of those stubborn mothers who will always call him by his full name.

I also love:
-Phillip, but not Phil
-Edward and Edmund, but not Ed or Eddie
-Peter, but not Pete
-Thomas, but not Tom, Thom, or Tommy
-Joseph, but not Joe or Joey
-Lewis, but not Lou or Louie

I still wouldn't hesitate to use any of them, because I think they're all short enough to be fine without a nickname. But if I loved, say, Bartholomew, and hated Bart, I'd probably think twice.

They would probably call him Pete. But if he insisted on going by Peter, they might not. The only problem is, you can't control what your son will want to be called, and he might like being called Pete.

Hmm... I love David and hate Dave. I love Edward and hate pretty much all the nicknames, except for Ted and Teddy, which wouldn't work anyway, because my grandparents have a dog named Teddy.

Actually now that I think about it. I know 2! One is in his 30's (and has never been called Tom) another is my sister's nephew. He's 4 and no one calls him Tom.

Ok, I think it's pretty much inevitable that people *will* shorten Peter to Pete. It just happens. However, if you just keep firmly but politely reminding people that it's "Peter, not Pete" then they will get the message and I'm sure it won't be an issue.

You should bear in mind though that, even if you don't like it, he might want to use the nickname when he gets older... My fiance is Michael and I have never heard his parents call him anything other than Michael. On the other hand, he introduces himself as Mike and goes by Mike/Mikey to everyone else as he doesn't like his full name at all.

We are struggling with this same thought. We like the name Bradley (my mother's maiden name) but my husband hates "Brad."

I am a middle school teacher, and I had several students this year who did NOT use abbreviations:
Elijah
Michael
Nathan
Jacob/Jakob
Nathaniel
etc.

I think it can be done! Send the kiddo off to school knowing his name is Peter, not Pete, and everyone else should figure it out.

I knew a few Peters in elementary school, and by the time they got to high school they all insisted on being called Pete. I have since met a few other Peters who always go by Peter. I don't think other people would call him Pete if you always introduced him (or he introduced himself) as Peter, but there's a good chance he could choose to be called Pete later on. If you dislike the idea of having a teenage/adult Pete I'd stay away from Peter, but if you're OK with that and just think it would be weird to have a little kid named Pete I'd say go for it.

they may. i agree that usually people will call other people by whatever they're introduced to them as, but my brother's name is peter (he is thirteen) and we've never introduced him as or called him pete, but that's pretty much what he goes by in school. maybe he introduces himself that way, though? i have no idea.

i love abigail but i really hate abby. and gail, for that matter.

Luckily Peter isn't very long, so he won't get many people calling him Pete...but there will still be some that do XP
