So to twist it around... what names do you really like, that most other people just don't? Are you stuck on an -ayden name? Is one of the Jon and Kate sextuplets sporting one of your favorites? Are you considering that old-lady moniker for your newborn?
Are you going to use your name no matter what people say?
When I first put my name list together, I used the name Willa, and it totally bombed in votes and I'm not quite sure why. (Willa Cather, anyone?) I decided it was just kind of obscure and I didn't LOVE it, my husband didn't like it at all, so I abandoned it.
Theresa (possibly with nickname Tess or Tessa) is definitely one of my front runners and not too many people seem to like that either. It's a family name though, and I'm holding on to it!
I've also noticed that Warren tends to do poorly in votes. Also a family name that's in definite contention for a middle name. And recently I've noticed a lot of scoffing here at Finnegan, which is also a family name I'd use as a middle.

Date: 2009-06-30 02:22 am (UTC)Also, I have had really mixed reviews about Dietrich, but it's definitely one of my favorites. Only a few people here liked it, and everyone outside of this community definitely didn't. I am probably going to use it anyway.

Date: 2009-06-30 02:40 am (UTC)Boys: Emerson (I think it sounds too trendy?), Dexter, Oberlin (as a middle name, it's a family thing), Augustus, Nicodemus, Atticus, Sirius, Locke.
And just for fun, here are some of my SO's favorite names that I hate: Ryan, Charles, Johan, Jessica, Lisa, Maria.

Date: 2009-06-30 03:00 am (UTC)I haven't shared my favorite names, but my husband really hates some that I kinda liked that have now been crossed off the list:
Auberon
Dalton
Ansel
Edison
Mendel
Alaric
Yes, I'm completely lame. :p

Date: 2009-06-30 03:19 am (UTC)The one name people don't seem to like that much is my very favourite, Julie (everyone seems to prefer Julia, Juliet, Juliana, etc.). I love Juliet too, but Julie's been my favourite for a long time.
I'm also fond of a lot of odder old lady names, especially Agnes and Maude (but they're not names I would actually use).

Date: 2009-06-30 05:06 am (UTC)And I don't think anyone likes any of my girls names. Which sucks because they're hard for me to find ones I like... and they ALL have meaning. Evangeline (my best friend is named Evan, and I want to honor him), Brooklyn (my dad's birthplace), Astoria (EVERYONE hates this, but I was inspired by "So Long, Astoria" by The Ataris. It's so pretty when they say it), etc.

Date: 2009-06-30 06:54 am (UTC)When Fiona was still number one on my list, I remember talking to my dad about my future children, and I mentioned that as a potential name. He looked at me like I was drunk and then started laughing. This from the man who almost gave my brother the initials 'KKK.' *rolls eyes*

Date: 2009-06-30 08:15 am (UTC)I don't really care what others say about the names I have chosen. I've already omitted any names that could cause family drama and things like that so unless someone had a really good reason I don't think it matters what people think.
All the names you stated are real names (unlike Nevaeh) so even if they're no someone else's style it's not mean to name your child that name.

Date: 2009-06-30 10:39 am (UTC)In my names lists, Frances (as a mn even) doesn't seem to do well, nor do Rosalie or Llewellyn (also both used as mns). I can understand Llewellyn because a lot of people aren't familiar with it, but what's wrong with Frances and Rosalie? I'd use all of those names anyway because the girls' names honor relatives and Llewellyn I've loved forever and it honors my heritage.
People here seem to like Margaret fine, but my mother doesn't really like it. Too bad, Mom. She likes Maggie, at least, which is what we'd call our Margaret.

I think the fact that people have totally trashed it but I love it anyway means that it's going to stick for me, though. :P
I used to really like the name Caleb, and a lot of people here don't like that name for some reason. We've since moved it to the middle name slot, though, in the name Jude Caleb.

Bijou
Penny
Sebastien
Skandar

They're still on my list though, and I left off some of the particularly weirder ones, but if I find a guy who wants to name our kids Bohemia and Jagger, gosh darn it I'm doing it.
