So to twist it around... what names do you really like, that most other people just don't? Are you stuck on an -ayden name? Is one of the Jon and Kate sextuplets sporting one of your favorites? Are you considering that old-lady moniker for your newborn?

Are you going to use your name no matter what people say?

When I first put my name list together, I used the name Willa, and it totally bombed in votes and I'm not quite sure why. (Willa Cather, anyone?) I decided it was just kind of obscure and I didn't LOVE it, my husband didn't like it at all, so I abandoned it.

Theresa (possibly with nickname Tess or Tessa) is definitely one of my front runners and not too many people seem to like that either. It's a family name though, and I'm holding on to it!

I've also noticed that Warren tends to do poorly in votes. Also a family name that's in definite contention for a middle name. And recently I've noticed a lot of scoffing here at Finnegan, which is also a family name I'd use as a middle.

For girls, Irene and Theodora are the ones that immediately spring to mind. Oh, and Rose. Apparently it's too boring and/or old-fashioned.

For boys, no one seems to like Evander, but I really love it.

Nobody seems to like Justice for a boy, but I do. I don't think I'd ever use it, but I really like the sound of it.

Also, I have had really mixed reviews about Dietrich, but it's definitely one of my favorites. Only a few people here liked it, and everyone outside of this community definitely didn't. I am probably going to use it anyway.

Katelyn (Kaitelynne) or any variation, seems to be hated by almost everyone now-a-days. i don't get it. it's such a pretty girly name, imo. or maybe that's why..? for me, i'm into the whole lil girl, princess thing, so i automatically think that Katelyn sounds like the name of princess. i think that it can also be shorteded to Kate or Katy later in life, no problem, so it ages with the child. and it's my favorite girl name. i don't care what ppl say, i'm still using it. i'm not sure if i'll use the first spelling i had chosen Kaitelynne, but i'm definitely using the "K" spelling and won't feel a bit ashamed :D

Girls: Margot, Harper, Thora, Skadi (pronounced skah-dee, thinking about using the combination Eva Skadi), Penelope, Phoebe, Evangeline.

Boys: Emerson (I think it sounds too trendy?), Dexter, Oberlin (as a middle name, it's a family thing), Augustus, Nicodemus, Atticus, Sirius, Locke.

And just for fun, here are some of my SO's favorite names that I hate: Ryan, Charles, Johan, Jessica, Lisa, Maria.

Most of my top names are pretty standard classics (Katherine, Elizabeth, etc.) ... if anything, people find them boring.

The one name people don't seem to like that much is my very favourite, Julie (everyone seems to prefer Julia, Juliet, Juliana, etc.). I love Juliet too, but Julie's been my favourite for a long time.

I'm also fond of a lot of odder old lady names, especially Agnes and Maude (but they're not names I would actually use).

So many of my names. Ryder, Bradley, Brandon, Landon, Kyle...

And I don't think anyone likes any of my girls names. Which sucks because they're hard for me to find ones I like... and they ALL have meaning. Evangeline (my best friend is named Evan, and I want to honor him), Brooklyn (my dad's birthplace), Astoria (EVERYONE hates this, but I was inspired by "So Long, Astoria" by The Ataris. It's so pretty when they say it), etc.

Maybe Willa bombed because of the association with Willa Ford? Just guessing.

When Fiona was still number one on my list, I remember talking to my dad about my future children, and I mentioned that as a potential name. He looked at me like I was drunk and then started laughing. This from the man who almost gave my brother the initials 'KKK.' *rolls eyes*

I absolutely love the name Willa.

I don't really care what others say about the names I have chosen. I've already omitted any names that could cause family drama and things like that so unless someone had a really good reason I don't think it matters what people think.

All the names you stated are real names (unlike Nevaeh) so even if they're no someone else's style it's not mean to name your child that name.

Date: 2009-06-30 10:39 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] penguiny7.livejournal.com
I like Willa and Theresa out of your names, and I certainly don't dislike Warren.

In my names lists, Frances (as a mn even) doesn't seem to do well, nor do Rosalie or Llewellyn (also both used as mns). I can understand Llewellyn because a lot of people aren't familiar with it, but what's wrong with Frances and Rosalie? I'd use all of those names anyway because the girls' names honor relatives and Llewellyn I've loved forever and it honors my heritage.

People here seem to like Margaret fine, but my mother doesn't really like it. Too bad, Mom. She likes Maggie, at least, which is what we'd call our Margaret.

My most inappropriate love is Lucifer for a boy. I know I could never use it, but I love the sound and the meaning and the way it looks.

I do really like Rose and Grace, despite their popularity: also Faith, which most people seem to think is a bit fuddy-duddy.

Why does Lucifer have to have such negative cultural associations?!

I (and this was very expected!) get mixed reactions for one of my favorite names: Clover.
People either really don't get it/think its ridiculous, or they understand and love it.
I think the fact that people have totally trashed it but I love it anyway means that it's going to stick for me, though. :P

I used to really like the name Caleb, and a lot of people here don't like that name for some reason. We've since moved it to the middle name slot, though, in the name Jude Caleb.

I just added Hayden to both my boy and girl list, so I don't care too much about that. I took Braeden off though. God, names that people don't like is pretty much the majority of my list.

Dreama
Agnes
Ireland
Laken
Saxon
Bijou
Penny

Sebastien
Skandar
Brawley
Orrin

They're still on my list though, and I left off some of the particularly weirder ones, but if I find a guy who wants to name our kids Bohemia and Jagger, gosh darn it I'm doing it.
