Hey everyone,

So, I'm pregnant (due in late August) and it's a girl! Yay for girls! You've all got to tell me what you think of the name Belladonna Rose honestly, okay? By the way, I would rarely call her Belladonna; I'm going to choose either Belle/Bella or Donna and pretty much stick with that one as what she'll go by. Here are my three reasons for choosing it:

1. My favourite band is Belle & Sebastian. I want to name my daughter after them, but Belle is kind of... too short and too common for me.

2. (Yes, I am a massive fangirl. I can't help it!) One of my favourite fictional characters and role models ever is Donna(tella) Moss from The West Wing and I would love to name my daughter after such a strong, beautiful, compassionate, intelligent and funny woman (yeah, I'm aware she's not real!), but I'm not big on the name Donna by itself.

3. It means "beautiful woman" and what girl wouldn't like to be called that?

So yes, there you are. Rose as the middle name because it's my best friend's name. Do you guys think it's all right?

Although it does mean beautiful woman in italian, and that is a very pretty meaning. I like either Bella or Donna, not both put together.

I prefer Bella though, meaning beautiful.

It's okay. I think "Belle" would be much nicer, as I really don't think "Donna" is an aesthetically pleasing name, and I think Belladonna is a bit of a mouthful, but the meaning is nice and it's not made-up or anything. Just keep in mind that your music and show tastes will (way more than likely) change with age, and be sure you would still like the name if a) the band never existed and b) the show never existed.

It seems to be a perfect name for you because it incorporates two names that are meaningful to you but seem incomplete on their own.

BUT... it instantly makes me think of belladonna the poison that women used to drip into their eyes to make their pupils dilate. I wonder if many other people will have that association

The poison.

That was my first thought.

Belladonna is another name for deadly nightshade. I'd choose between Bella or Donna.

It's waaay too much for a fist name. I love Belle though! I don't understand why people in general name their child something without even intending to call them that. I'm a Jennifer that goes by Jenn or Jenna, it's a pain in the ass to get people to stop reading what my written name is and just call me what I prefer. If you're not even going to call her that, then just go ahead and name her what you are going to. Belle or Bella (to shorten it maybe?) is absolutely beautiful, and not nearly as much of a mouthful. Good luck!

First, it's way, way too much.

Second - I think this came up in this community a while ago - Belladonna is a famous porn star.
She's a rather nasty one, too. I don't think you want a google search on your daughter's name to reveal that, or see a porn site when you type in www dot belladonna dot com. eeeew.

I actually love it. I really like Belladonna, even if it's kind of a mouthful.
One of my favorite names is Bella, which I like a lot better than just Belle.
Rose makes a good middle name, short and simple enough...
And being a massive fangirl of certain things myself, I can totally understand the desire to name for a fictional character.

It's pretty. The only problem I have with it is that Belladonna is a poisonous plant that was used in the Middle Ages to kill people. It's a little gothy. Why not Donnatella Rose or Donnatella Belle? Or even two middle names and Donnatella Rose Belle or even Donnatella Rosabelle?

I really like the WW tribute! Love!

i agree that it's too much for a first name. she'd probably want to go by bella somewhere down the road anyways.

I really like the name Bella and the name Donna, which is my MIL's name. I do not like them together.

Per an above post, Rosabelle is super cute.

I personally don't like it that much, but I love your reasoning behind it. I am a big supporter of names that have meaning to those bestowing them. And I personally love Donna from The West Wing too so yay!

I've also come to the conclusion that as much as I ask other people their thoughts I really don't care so much about the answers because it's between my husband, my baby, and me. So don't put too much stock in what others tell you if you love it, go for it!

It's a poison, and a porn star.

Not a good name.

I think it's pretty, and I like how the names are meaningful to you.
But it is a bit of a mouthful and I wouldn't use it.
But I think it is right for you, and that you should go for it! It is not the kind of name that your daughter is going to hate you for, so if you really love it then I don't see a problem!
Good luck :)

I don't mean to offend you or anything this is just my opinion, I just hate Belladonna, too long! But I love Rose, since you don't like short names why not instead Bella Rose? I know you said it means beautiful woman, but the poor kid would have to write Belladonna, this long name for her signature.

I agree. Sorry but I think it's really awful and way too much. =/ Bella Rose is really nice, though. Even Donna Rose is better than Belladonna, although I'm not very fond of Donna at all.

I think Belladonna probably has too many negative connotations associated with it - it's a bit over the top. Bella is very pretty. I like the poster above's suggestion of Bella Rose.

I LOVE DONNA, TOO!!! She is the best character ever!!! Except if I named one of my kids after a WW character it'd be Josiah, Claudia Jean, Charlie, or Leo.

What about Donnabella to be more like Donnatella, since that's her full name? ;) Just kidding. I just thought I'd be a smart ass.

I really like the name Belladonna...it's different, but there's something about it I really like, and you're set on nicknames. And Rose as a middle name is adorable :). I plan on giving my future daughter the same middle name as my best friend...her first name doesn't work as a mn.

I like how it flows... Belladonna Rose. But actually, I think Belladonna is too long and I know this medecine called Bellaisadonna and it reminds me of that.

Donna Rose.. is the better choice, I think.

I would call her Belle or Bella, and which one depends on whether you wanna stick with the Italian sound or go more toward French. And even if she always goes by Bella, I'm sure people will call her Bel/Belle for short anyway. =D It's nice. And congratulations!

I think Bella Rose would be beautiful. Or even Bellarose. But Belladonna is just bad. Plus, the whole poision and pornstar thing. If you are going to name her that, I'd call her Bella, because Donna is such an older persons name.

I like "Bella Rose" better...

I agree with everyone else. Belle, Bella, or Bellarose would be great. Belladonna is a bit over the top, and it has a lot of negetive conotations.
