[identity profile] the-theorist.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

*I'm not actually having a baby

This weekend my best friend and I went camping and while we were there we talked a lot about names.   She mentioned Summer for a boy.  Neither of us had ever heard of it, but I actually really like it.

So, what do you think of the name Summer for a boy?  Please feel free to let loose your true feelings even if you despise it with a passion.

Well, I normally would pick this for a girl, but it could work for a guy too. i would just recommend making the spelling more masculine.

How would you make the spelling more masculine? I mean, it's Summer.

I have no clue. museofmyself suggested replacing the 'u' with an 'o'. I think that makes it looks boyish.

Yeah, Sommer would be pretty nice for a boy, I think.

Unfortunately, season names have traditionally been used for girls primarily so I have a difficult time picturing a boy named Summer. How about spelling it Sommer? :)

While I think the name is pretty, I would hate to be a boy, named Summer, through middle school and high school. Come on, those times are hard enough.

while i don't dislike it, I think he'd be picked on, whereas a girl wouldn't. If you like seasons, a boy called autumn wouldn't i don't think, and that's a pretty name too!

Autumn's a girl's name too, unfortunately. I've known a few Autumns. [livejournal.com profile] museofmyself was right about season names being given to girls.

It's only okay for me as a girls' name, but I hate it as a boys' name because, well, it's a girls' name, lol.

I don't like it for a boy or girl.

it could be interesting except it's already so deeply connotated as being a girl's name

I know of boys named Sumner and that sounds more masculine. But I really like Sommer for a girl.

Sumner is fabulous! Thanks for the idea, I'm adding it to my list of fave boy names. :)

I don't like it for a boy. To me it just seems like a name that he would get ridiculed quite a bit for. I like it for a girl but maybe that's because I've never heard of a boy named that and society has brain washed me into thinking it's only for a girl. haha!

What they said. It's a girls' name. He'd never live it down.

I work with a female Summer. It would be really hard to picture that name on a boy.

Wow, the poor guy would be made fun of relentlessly! It's a girl's name.

Well. I despise it. Basically. I don't even like it for a girl.

I like it for a girl.

I just think its way too pretty to be a boys name.

I knew a guy called Brook once, and he really suffered in highschool. Even though Brook was originally a guy's name, everyone (especially kids in his generation) knew it to be a girl's name. Whereas Summer, I think has probably always been used mostly for girls. It is becoming a lot more popular, so by the time you do have a child, the other kids will really think of Summer as a girl's name even more than they do now, probably.

I like Brooks for a boy, but not just Brook. Weird. Poor kid.

Summer is one of my FAVE girl names, so NO WAY for a boy.

Sumner, although it's a city in Washington, is ok for a boy.

I don't like it at all. I think he'd be teased a lot because Summer is such a girly, feminine name.

I am not keen on Summer as a boy name. May I recommend "Sunday" instead? (I would concede that it might be only marginally more "manly", for whatever that may be worth, but I read a story with a male character named Sunday and thought it was actually quite nice.)
