Today I decided I just love love love the name Rosie, so much in fact, that it could finally be "the one" for my  husband and I. I have been extremely indecisive so far in choosing a name for our daughter (due Sept. 30) and I can't resist getting the opinions of everyone here, as well as researching the name possibilities as much as I can. Anyway, here goes,...[Poll #1411205][Poll #1411205]My husband is half asian, half hispanic. I am american so I am assuming our children will look mixed if that makes any difference. (It makes a difference to me in a way, I just can't imagine our children with certain names because they just don't seem to fit the picture I have in my head of what our kids will look like.)

"I am american"

??? American is...not a race.

Technically if German is a race so is American.

race

4. a group of tribes or peoples forming an ethnic stock: the Slavic race.
5. any people united by common history, language, cultural traits, etc.: the Dutch race.

Sorry morningapproach, one outta two. Unless the OP is American Indian, she's an amalgam of immigrants. Probably even if she is American Indian, too. Cuz you know, there was that whole thing with the Pilgrims and some jerks with some boats and some crap about colonies or whatever.

I don't think that you need to have both things to be considered a certain "race". I think that just because there are two definitions for a term doesn't need you need to have both to be considered an element of that thing.

So because the Americans fit the second definition I would considere them to be a "race"

So because you don't agree with or understand something, it invalidates it. That's how Creationists work, too.

Also "Americans" don't fit the second definition at all, not even when you narrow the focus to people of similar skin colors. Some Whites came over on the Mayflower from England, some came from Ireland during the potato famines, some even later than that from any nation in Europe. Likewise, some Americans of Chinese descent go all the way to the railroad-lying days, while some are first generation immigrants, maybe not even from China but from another country where their grandparents+ immigrated to first.

I never said that I didn'tunderstand or agree with the definition, nor did I invalidate it. There is no need to be insulting. I am having (what I thought was) a friendly academic debate, and at no point did I get rude or insulting, I merely disagreed.

Sorry, perhaps I should have clarified. Most people I know who refer to themselves as "americans" or "canadians" and don't consider themselves to be poly-nationa/raciall trace their families back to the the mid 1700s-1800s. So I think that it is safe to say that there are some for whom a shared American history/culture is accurate, and that therefore they can be considered a part of the American Race

(I should probably point out that I don't like the use of the word Race at all)

Didn't mean to be insulting, sorry. I have an accidentally sarcastic tone.

I agree to disagree with you.

Fair enough. Then we need to exclude Asian from it, since there are so many varying nationalities/physical traits that are included in the broad term "Asian"

I actually agree with this... maybe North American? not even... a big portion of The United States (cause... American you know means from America... and America tends to include Sotuh and Central in my book) has a severe superiority problem so I would rather not argue... but it isn't really a race. I can be hispanic and North American but blah.

Rosalie reminds me too much of Twilight, and I despise all things twilight :(

Rosemary sounds amazing though :)

Double ditto. Never saw such a piece of postfeminist trash. Get your kids to read (a horrible story with a horrible moral by a horrible person).

I haaate Twilight but then i was one of those kids that read Dracula in he 9th grade and thank you very much Anne Rice for helping Twilight destroy the vampire myth. Bram must be just turning ove in his grave and also... the writing and grammatical errors int he book are... saddening because kids read this and learn how to write... crap.

Bad Morals?

I'll sum up the books for you.

Oh Edward. You are so qt but I am dumb and unworthy, what am I to do for I am but a woman! I shall adore you and demurely follow you like a puppy no matter what because I love you and you love me too i'm sure of it. Don't do me til we're married and we're undead for though I am a simple female I know my place and I shall not act upon my unnatural lust; a woman shall not want, after all. and once we are married and you have placed your mighty male mark upon my virtuous neck, we shall live forevermore in a small remote cottage where I will scrub the floors and never talk to anyone but you and have your undead magically-growing-up-in-a-year-like-in-TV-soap-operas babies for eternity

Trufax.

take a skim through [livejournal.com profile] twilight_sucks
there's a lot of bitching and moaning on that community, but there's also a lot of solid information on what it is that's so horrible about Twilight.

I really like just Rose on its own. If I had to pick one of the others I would go with Rosemary, but most of the other possibilities I can think of just sound very old to me, I can't picture them on a young person.

I was actually just talking about how pretty Rosemary is today. But I wouldn't use it, because even I would be making Rosemary's Baby jokes. I am surprised that Rosalie has the most votes. Blah.

To actually contribute:

I voted Rose. It's simple, it's pretty, it's not overly "Look at me my name is SPECIAL." Rosalie is alright, but a tad 'toadstools and fairy princesses.' Rosario is masculine.

Rosemary is also pretty.

I like Rose best out of all the choices up there. It's simple and classic. Rosemary would be my second choice. Don't care for any of the rest.

Ooh nice! I LOVE the name Rosie as well!

I voted for Rose, because (as everyone else already said) it's classic but not boring. Rosalie is nice too, but just too princessy for my taste.

I voted for Rosalie because that name is dear to me (name of a relative). But I LOVE Rosemary too. And Rose is also nice. Dislike all other Rose type names though. And I'm SO glad you're wanting to find a full name for Rosie and not just use Rosie as a full name!

I voted Rosemary because it's such a sweet, old-fashioned name and not very common. In fact I've never met a Rosemary that I can think of. My second choice is Rose--short, sweet, simple, classic.

Rosalie is very pretty but I do associate it with Twilight (which I love, by the way, and so do millions of other people, judging by the success of the books. I'm not specifically trying to bash the Twilight-bashers, just letting you know that if you choose the name, there's at least as many people that will like the Twilight connection as hate it.)

Rosie is a great choice, by the way--sweet, adorable, spunky, classic. Has everything going for it!
