[identity profile] babyrodriguez1.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
My husband and I just added another favorite to our list of names for our baby girl-

Leah

(The rest of our list consists of Ada, Milla, Cora & Juliet.)

Anyway, our name of the day is Leah, what do you all think? And for those of you that don't already know, our only real preference is that the name isn't really popular but also isn't too "out there".

I grew up with like 5 Leah's... or variations of this, so I don't know. It's just like another Ashley, Jennifer, or Samantha to me. Kinda boring.

Leah isn't that popular now (or I don't think?), and I don't know if it was just a Wisconsin thing? But it seemed VERY popular when I was growing up (born in 1989).

I knew quite a few Samantha's, most called Sam... can't believe you've only known 2!

I read somewhere recently that "popular" names are actually much less popular than they seem - people are becoming more diverse with the way the name their babies, so although a name might be way up there on the popularity list, like Jacob or Emily, there are fewer children with those names than there would have been children with the #1 names 10 years ago. The numbers are being spread out amongst a wider variety of names, which means popularity is becoming less and less of an issue.

My sister is a Leah born in 1989, so you might be right. :)

i think leah is a really pretty name. are you pronouncing it lee-uh or lay-uh? (i always read it as the first one, but i think both are legitimate) i've only met a couple of leah's, all in my generation and older. out of your list, i think cora and leah are my favorites. ada reminds me of the aiden/ava crazes, and the juliet/julia/julie names seem really popular to me and, while pretty, are starting to get boring.
i'm not sure how to pronounce milla (me-la? mill-a?) but i think it'd be a cute nickname for camilla, which i really like!

that's my favorite pronunciation. :)

cora is definitely not overused. i don't know why it's not more popular, it's so pretty!

milla could also be a nickname for millicent or something, though that doesn't really fit your style i don't think. i agree that it sounds kind of incomplete, though it's still cute. what do you think of willa? sounds like milla, but not so much like a nickname?

I love Leah.

I like all of these, minus Milla. In order: Juliet, Ada, Leah, Cora, Milla.

nothing that would be constantly misspelled/mispronounced

Not 100% guaranteed. My sister has had issues with people dropping the "h" and pronouncing it "lay-uh", but the second issue might have to do with her age (20), and most of the people thinking of Star Wars/Princess Leia.

A close friend of mine is about to have a baby (she was due a week and a half ago! I'm hoping she'll have the baby tomorrow on my birthday. lol), and if she has a girl she will be named Leah. I think it is a pretty name, although it's a little boring for my taste. I don't think it's terribly common, though.

I've said this before in posts asking about this name, but I'm always confused when people say Leah is "trendy" or "too popular". My name is Leah and to this day, I only know about 2 others and they're both my age. I hated my name as a child because it was so unpopular and no one else had it.

I'm stunned by its recent upsurgence. I don't think it's too common and I don't think it's too out there.

I love it, but as I said above it's my sister's name so there's no way I could ever use it myself, lol.

Edit: Out of curiosity, what would the middle name be?

Leah's a nice name. Its popularity is on the rise because of Jon and Kate, though. And I like Milla of the ones remaining on your list.

I've always liked the name Leah. I think it has a very beautiful sound and it's also really classic/timeless.

I like it. I have a "friend" named Leah, who I have posted about extensively, and even her occasional dumbness/insensitivity can not make me hate the name... I just could never use it because she would think I was honoring her.

I love Leah. It's been one of the consistent names on my always-changing list of favorite names.

Yes, it's popular, but it's also just a really, really nice name!
I like it.

Of the names on your list, I like Juliet best, then Leah, Milla, Ada and Cora.

Sorry, but I kind of dislike Leah. I don't really like the sound of it, and the only ones I haven't liked the two Leahs I've known. I'd MUCH prefer to see any of the names on the rest of your list. I love Ada and Juliet especially.

Whoops, when I reworded that one part I didn't delete some of the words! What I was saying is that I've known two Leahs and disliked both of them, so it's given me a bad impression of the name.

I love Leah. I might have named my second daughter Leah, except it's my tennis doubles partner's name and it would have been a little weird.

I also like Cora and Juliet.

Leah is probably my favorite out of the bunch. I don't think it's too common. At least it's not around here. I only know one Leah.

I think Leah Juliet is lovely.
