(no subject)

Help me pick (I have some time, not due till November but I like to plan ahead lol)
These are my top 15 girl names (as first names) of the moment. Middle names would depend on the first name (feel free to make suggestions) and the last name sounds like Homer (mostly). On a scale of 1-10 (one being it sucks bad and 10 being you wish it were your own name) tell me what you think. If your own name appears on the list, please grade it abstractly as if it were not your name but you were really called by something else and just looking at the name like any other name on the list. Please leave any comments or other name suggestions (I like old-world, unique, original sounding names) in comments I'd love to hear them all!

[Poll #736127]

Thanks for playing!

Hmm not a bad selection over all
Didn't grade Alexis, Emma or Rory very highly because they are so trendy/common right now. So they aren't really 'old-world, unique, original' names.

Ivy Clara is one of my fave names right now :)

As for suggestions, this list might give some ideas [the right balance of 'old world' but a fair few are coming back into style]...

Rhythmically, something that does not have two syllables stressed on the first syllable will flow best. With a "sounds-like-Homer" surname, I'd definitely grade down any two syllable first name that:

a) has a long stressed OH sound (Chloe, Rory)
b) has a second syllable that begins with M (Emma)

Lots of great choices here, though :)

Even though it'd be a "double I" I really like

Ivy Isabella

I think it sounds just beautiful together.

Alexis - Sounds kind of dated and 80s to me.

Amelia - I like it, but it's pretty common nowadays.

Chloe - LOVE!

Clara - I really like this. :)

Ella - Ehhh. I'm really not into the whole Elle/Ella trend.

Eva - Well if you want it pronouced Ava, you should spell it Ava. She'd constantly be correcting people if you spell it Eva.

Emma - I love it but it was the #2 most popular name in 2005. She'd be one of four Emmas in her class at school. =/

Genevieve - Ok.

Gwendolyn - Pretty, but I don't like Gwen as a nn.

Isabella - Pretty, but also very popular.

Isadora - Nah.

Ivy - Adorable! I'm not sure it ages well, though.

Lorelai - Like it.

Mia - Like it a lot!

Rory - I can NOT see Rory aging well at all. Cute for a three year old, but not a teenager or a grown woman (and I think the same thing everytime I watch Gilmore Girls!)

Oh ok. I really like the sound of ehva.

How would you pronounce Clara? It's one of my very favourite names, pronounced Claw-ruh.

[identity profile] twoheadedboi.livejournal.com 2006-05-26 09:46 am (UTC)(link)
I thought it was more Clar - ah. Like Cara with an L in there.

[identity profile] mrsduryee.livejournal.com 2006-05-26 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL....is Cara "car like a vehicle" or cair-a?

[identity profile] twoheadedboi.livejournal.com 2006-05-26 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Like a vehicle :P

Yay for Amelia! (It's my name.) Anyway, as for the others, you have mostly really good ones (I especially like Isabella) but Emma's way too common and... I don't know, Gwendolyn always reminds me of the character from Mallory Towards. It's too princess-y.

I love that almost all of your names are really feminine! That might sound weird, but I just don't like the trend of giving girls names for boys and vice-versa (though that is far less common).

I like Ella, but I don't think it is strong enough to stand alone as a name. Its better as a nn, I'd go with Isabella and nn Ella.

Several of the names posted are nicknames, in my opinion. My two favorites are Amelia and Isabella.

I really like Mia and Gwendolyn (and agree w/the above poster who said your names are very girly....i'm a super girly girl and hope to use super sweet names!)

I am not a fan of Lorelai, but have you considered Lealoni? (in any spelling you choose. i have heard it pronounced "Lay Lonnie") it is Hawaiian I believe, and just beautiful.

Alexis- 3. I definetly prefer Alexa. I know several male Alexis' so that pushes it down lots for me.
Amelia- 10. I would be perfectly happy to change my name to Amelia, had i not defiently decided to name my daughter Amelia! I think it's gorgeous.
Chloe-6. I would like this a lot more if i didnt know so many...
Clara-2. This does nothing for me, it's not ugly.. it's just a bit boring.. and i don't like Clare.
Ella-6. Same feelings as Chloe.
Eva- 8. Would be a 9 if it was actually spelt Ava.
Emma- 4. So bloody popular. Used to be quite a classy name i think, but i know so many Emma's who i hate (apart from my best friend whom i love!)
Genevieve-5. I really like this, but only the romantic idea of it.. i think it's a bit over the top.. good middle name perhaps.
Gwendolyn-1. really really ugly.
Isabella-8. beautiful, trendy at the moment... but i do love the name.
Isadora-2. Nowhere near the class of Isabella, quite ugly & reminds me of a witches name.
Ivy-4. nothing wrong with it really, but it's a bit...blah.
Lorelai-3. Too fussy.
Mia- 5- Mia to rhyme with Beer? or to rhyme with Fire? I prefer the first.. cute nn for Amelia (though i prefer Lia)
Rory-4 This is one of my favouritenames.... for a boy! If it was rated male wise i'd give it a 9. I've seen Rory suggested as a nickname for Aurora before, & Aurora i'd give a 7.
