Despite its popularity, I still really like Emma. Thoughts?

I fought it for that same reason, never found another name my husband and I could agree on, and now my 7 week old daughter is named Emma Ruby. And I love it.

Emma is pretty popular lately but to me it still seems like a classic name, like Jack.

I like it too. The popularity of names doesn't bother me much. I mean, when a name is on the 'top 100' list or whatever, that's nationwide. So it doesn't really mean that your child will grow up and be 1 of 15 Emma's in school, ya know? I only know of 3 people named Emma...so to me, it's not really THAT popular. This whole post probably doesn't make sense lol sorry. I need a nap.
in short... I say if you love a name, use it.

Why should you stop liking a name just because it's popular?

I think as long as people don't choose a name *specifically* because it's popular, then there's no reason not to use a name.
I believe following the trend just for the sake of it is bad, but if you love a name, what can you do? You can't let the herd-followers to ruin/steal a name :)

Well, if you look at the percentage of total births on the SSA website, it's only about as "popular" as my name was for my birth year (Melissa, 1988 - 16th most popular btw). This wasn't popular enough to really bother me, I've almost always been the only Melissa in a class/club/group/etc. Emma's also been declining in popularity somewhat for the past few years. You should only avoid it if you care about your daughter being the only one in her school with her name, IMO.

You could also try using it as a nickname for a longer name (Emmeline, Emory, pretty much anything beginning with M), so she has something more "unique" to fall back on if the popularity bothers her.

Really? I went to school with tons of Melissa's. It must be regional.

That is a good point. It seems to be less popular in my state than in other parts of the country. Also, were you born before 1988? It's slightly more popular among people a few years older than me, and much more popular among people 5-20 years older.

It's popular, but it's not trendy. Emma is a name that will survive this time of popularity. No matter what date it is, Emma will always be a classic, nice name, and never date her to a certain time period. For instance, Madison will totally be recognized as a child born in the 2000s, and Jessica will probably be recognized as a child of the 80s, but with Emma, she could have been born today or 20 years ago.

Which brings me to my point: Emma, despite being popular, is a great name and will survive the test of time.

If you love it, go for it.

I've just never thought that it was a pretty name, popular or not. I don't get it.

When it comes to classic names, I don't worry about popularity too much. I believe trendy and popular is bad (like Madison, Aidan, etc) whereas classic and popular (like Emma, Noah, Abigail) are fine because they are more likely to withstand the test of time and outlast trends.

It's one of those classic names that is popular because it's a good solid name. It's not trendy or anything. I only know one girl my age named Emma and then a little girl named Emma so I don't even see it around that much.

It's been my favourite name for as long as I can remember. It annoyed me when it suddenly got really popular again, but like others have been saying, it is classic and timeless. I'll probably still use it if/when I have kids.
