What's everyone's opinion on color names?

I'm not talking about Ruby or Ebony...I'm talking primary/secondary colors: Blue, Purple, etc...

I feel like they can only really work as middle names (Soleil Moon Frye's daughter is Jagger Joseph Blue...and Blue is the only part I like in the name) or as nicknames.

The reason I ask is that a former classmate of mine gave birth Wednesday and named the kid Purple Ray Mom'sLastName-Dad'sLastName. The baby's parents seem pretty rad and I'm sure the kid will grow into it...but WDYT? (the baby is a girl)

"Purple Ray" sounds like a fun-filled acid trip ride.

Blue is a guilty pleasure name of mine, because of the protagonist in one of my favorite books. I'd never actually use it though, both because there are names I like much more and because I think it sounds a little odd.

As far as primary colors go, I think Blue is the only one that could work as a (middle) name.

Yes I am! =D

Purple Ray makes me think of Purple Rain...I'm not a fan of it. Blue seems to be relatively common as a middle name; I knew 2 people in college whose middle names were Blue.

Do the parents like Prince, by chance? lol

[identity profile] matika88.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think primary/secondary colors really work as names, only a middle name and IMO only "Green" since it is a last name. But I still think it's a little weird for my taste!

[identity profile] anamericanchild.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
It depends on the name.
I love Grey. And Azure... does that count? lol.
Blue MAY be okay... as a middle name it's not so bad.
Purple, however, I don't like.

seconded. Grey is lovely.

[identity profile] bambiblake007.livejournal.com 2009-03-31 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
Grey is a pretty name, indeed.

I think Brown could work as a name, and Blue, but that's it.

I know a girl named Green. It works okay on her, but I don't love it.

I knew a girl named Silver once and it was SO weird. These days, I think it'd be really hard to pull off and 99% of the time it'd get eyerolls, but I think if well done it'd be really great.

That is an awful, AWFUL name. Blue is about the only one I can stomach, along with Redd.

[identity profile] th3-unicorn.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Purple just sounds bad.
What are they going to shorten it to, Purr?

[identity profile] patsfan610.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
the only primary color name i like is Greyson nn Grey

[identity profile] sandtree.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Colour names like 'Blue' usually strike me as kind of pretentious, along the same lines as random occupation names like 'Sailor,' random word names like 'Sonnet,' or random-French-word names like 'Soleil.'

[identity profile] liselaime.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the names Amber (although it's kind of a stripper name to me), Sienna, Carmine, Jade, Lavender, Scarlet, Saffron, and Violet are all workable first names. I wouldn't necessarily name my kids any of them, but they're not unheard of.

[identity profile] liselaime.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL, totally missed the part where you talked about primary colors. Yeah, primary colors don't work as first names, but maybe as middle names.

[identity profile] justsurvive.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
all of the names in this post except ruby suck. suck suck suck. purple ray? were they tripping on acid when they thought this up?
and jagger blue? poor kid.

moon frye? god. hippies need to stop procreating.

[identity profile] laminy.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I like Blue and Gray. I would agree, they tend to be better in the middle name position.

Purple Ray is just...awful.

[identity profile] apathykisses.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually like the name Blue and Moon, but only as middle names. I don't like Purple Ray at all.

[identity profile] kilobites.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, we want to use Grey as a middle name, and I think Blue can work okay.

[identity profile] la-jolie-vie.livejournal.com 2009-03-29 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
I tend to stay away from color names in general, but I think that Purple is a stupid name. I also do not like when people use Bleu/Blue/Blu.

[identity profile] arbus.livejournal.com 2009-03-29 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
purple ray = pink floyd

we are going to use gray as a middle name for our first boy, but thats because it was my mothers maiden name.

i know a dog named blue. he has blue eyes.

red is cute as a nickname (i am a redhead) but not a full name. i could see blue as a middle name. but i am pretty much up for just about anything as a middle name.

Oh man, that poor kid. And the middle name isn't even anything great to fall back on.

Generally I tend to think of color names as hippie names. Purple, Sunshine, Rayne, Coyote, etc. Not horrible I suppose, but definitely not my style. I think of Roan, Sienna, Grey and possibly Umber as exceptions to that rule, but I still wouldn't use them as given first names. Blue is what I see used most often, but almost exclusively as a middle name.

Purple Haze

[identity profile] freezemyazaleas.livejournal.com 2009-03-29 07:15 am (UTC)(link)
I think Red and Grey work. Blue is okay too I guess. Purple is good only if the kid turns out to be quirky and really cool.

Like everyone else, I like Grey and I think the only (primary) colour name that works is Blue, as a middle. John Travolta's daughter's name is Ella-Blu (although, I think she's always just called Ella) and I absolutely LOVE that.
