Wdyt of Carter as a first name for a boy?  I'm nowhere near expecting or anything (that pesky little problem of not having an SO and, you know, stil being in college); I just think I finally found a name I like for a boy that (to me) doesn't seem too weird or too popular.

1) Do you like it/not like it and why?

2) Do you think it fits my wish that it's not too popular and not too weird, either?

EDIT:

3) In reply to most of the comments I got haha, does anyone have any suggestions for a boy's name that would fit what I'm looking for?  It doesn't matter to me really if the name sounds preppy or whatever-the-opposite-of-preppy-is, because I believe in th whole "a rose by any other name would smell as sweet" idea that the person makes the name; the name doesn't make the person.

4) Even though a lot of you don't like Carter, if I do end up using it in, say, ten years haha, do you have any suggestions for a middle name?

I've never come across someone names Carter, and I don't think I'd find it strange if I did, so I think it meets your criteria pretty well.

It's not really my style, but I think it's a nice enough name.

It's not terrible, but I'm not really a fan of last-names-as-first-names.

It's also fairly trendy/popular, as in top 100 now. (http://www.babynamewizard.com/voyager#prefix=CARTER&ms=false&sw=f&exact=false)

#80 isn't really that bad, though. Number #80 the year I was born was Carlos. And I have known like, one Carlos ever.

Carter is a last name to me. I can see it on a preppy, spoiled rich boy. While it's not popular itself, the last-name-as-a-first-name trend has been on the rise for awhile now. I don't like it, but it could definitely be worse.

1) No - while I love the clothing line, I really don't like the idea of the name on an actual baby.

2) No - trade names (Carter, Parker, Hunter, Tanner, Taylor, Walker) are or were very recently very trendy. You might not know many people named Carter, but that's probably just because you don't know many 18 month old kids.

Sure-

3) "Not too popular but not too weird" was my criteria for naming my kid too. For boys names, I personally tended to gravitate towards exotic names that are popular in their country of origin, but not heard so much here (which makes them not popular- here in the US I mean, but not weird). We ended up having a son and named him Dmitri. We had also considered Viggo, but decided that was maybe a little too weird. :)

4) I'm so not a middle name person (didn't even give one to my kid), but I guess I'd have to agree with vie_rire_amour and say choose a solid classic middle name if you go with Carter.

I like it, it sounds kind of trendy, but I've never met (or even heard of) somebody with that as their first name. You may run into people only thinking of Nick and Aaron Carter though.

For something that's not too weird or popular you could go with classic names. William, and he could choose if he wanted to go by Will, Bill, Billy, etc; Some others are Dominic, Jarrod, Tyler, Ian, Marcus.

As for a middle name:
Carter David
Carter Michael
Carter Steven
Carter William

Definitely needs to be a solid middle name.

Funny, that was my first thought seeing it, but I'm also a huge Backstreet Boys fan.

I'm not even a fan and it was the first thing I thought of.

It's ok. I'm not really into the occupations-as-names fad. I also know a Carter who is about four now and parented completely without limits, so he's an unholy terror to be around. (Carter was the mom's maiden name which is why they used it.) Despite the association, I still think it's an ok name for someone else's kid, just not one I'd ever remotely consider myself.

My cousin had a baby a couple of months ago, and she named him Carter Jacob Donald :)

He's an adorable little cutie, so I have no problems with this name ;)

I love it. It's on my list for boy names. I do kinda think of Nick and Aaron Carter, though. But I've only heard it a rare few times as a first name. I love Connor as well and think it's kinda the same style.

Carter Miles
Carter Dierk
Carter Ethan
Carter Lucas
Carter Daniel

Yeah, given the fact you said you're in college (meaning you're the same "generation" as me), you'll probably find a lot of people who will think of Nick or Aaron Carter immediately (I did), and might assume you used the name because of one of them.
